ST GEORGE Illawarra's new halves pairing of Mark Gasnier and Ben Hornby will be on display for the first time in Saturday night's trial against the Bulldogs at WIN Stadium.
Dragons coach Nathan Brown yesterday named a near full-strength line-up for the match, with prop Jason Ryles, winger Luke MacDougall and back-rowers Danny Wicks and Sam Isemonger the only notable omissions from the side likely to be named for the club's historic opening-round clash against Gold Coast on March 18.
Star halfback Mathew Head and back-rower Dean Young will be sidelined until about round six with knee injuries, while prop Justin Poore is serving a four-match suspension.
"We've chosen a mixture of new faces and older heads," Brown said. "It gives some of the young blokes that we think might play first grade this year a chance to show what they can do and other guys like Gaz and Ben Hornby the chance to work on their combination.
"Gaz is excited about playing five-eighth and I know Benny is really looking forward to the game as well because it's the first time he's trained at halfback. Usually when he's played there it's been just to fill in for Heady but he's had an off-season to prepare."
With the departure of Clint Greenshields to French club Catalans, Brett Morris will switch from the wing to fill Hornby's regular fullback role - creating a spot for his twin brother Josh.
Teenager Chase Stanley, a star of the Endeavour High team that has won the national schoolboys competition for the past three years, was named on the other wing, with Wes Naiqama joining Matt Cooper in the centres.
Former Canberra captain Simon Woolford will make his debut for the Dragons at hooker, while Beau Scott's return to the club after a stint at Cronulla is in the back row.
Other new recruits Adam Peek, Tony Caine, Rhys Lovegrove and Rangi Chase were also named in the 20-man squad that includes 11 St George Illawarra juniors in the starting line-up.
Brown said he had yet to decide on a captain and was considering Gasnier, Hornby, Ryles and Woolford - either separately or as a leadership group.
Meanwhile, North Queensland, Cronulla, Canberra and Parramatta have all named strong line-ups for this weekend's trials, with Jason Smith to have his first run for the Cowboys against the Warriors in Mackay on Saturday night.
New signing Sione Faumuina has been chosen to play against his former club but will start the match from the bench.

to be honest im not expecting us to win this one, i hope we do but its very difficult when you have a near full strength dragons side
all the best to our boys though, i hope they do well

What is the story with props in that team - Cleal and Hickey seem the logical starters but outside of them the rest seem to be backrowers or hookers.

True... the only other possible front rower would be Wheatley. Its goin to be a good test for the young and inexperienced pack though.

It's hardly a full strength dragons side, given Ryles, Head, Young, Poore, MacDougall and others are missing!

Should be a good run for both sides.
