Dogs, 7 and 10 have already declared that they are going to jointly bid for the AFL rights again this time. It remains to be seen how One HD will affect this and how and where the 9th game will be shown (my money is on the friday night double header, ok i only reckon that because roy says so)Channel 9 then can't get away with saying that more ads equal minimal revenue increase, as you get the other 2 stations interested in telecasting the sport. I am sure there is a good chance that if the AFL rights don't go any higher (as they were overvalued last time), that Channel 7 may have a go at the rights themselves, as ultimately they want to be the AFL station. This will mean that Channel 10 can be part of the bidding.
Other options as have been outlined, is separating the products into NRL and ARL products (Tests + State Of Origin). This then means that bidding is more accessible for each station, as the commitment they make for each product telecast wise is a little less.
The last point is interesting, the ARL control the rights to the SOO do they not? Not the NRL? SOO at least should be free of the taint of News.
On top of that, SOO is the highest rated event on TV, only the GF rates higher.
Why isnt SOO sold seperately?
