Doyle wanted as NRL CEO

Taken from http://www.smh.com.au/rugby-league/...make-him-chief-executive-20151022-gkfnbb.html

The ARL Commission needs to throw the bank at Jim Doyle, drag him back to League Central and give him Smith's corner office. Forget about paying a recruitment agency truckloads to embark on an expensive "worldwide search". The best option is right under its nose. Doyle quit as chief operating officer in June last year to become chief executive at the Warriors.

Like anyone who has left League Central in the past three years, he went quietly. He was angry when this column suggested at the time he had grown tired of working under Smith and a dysfunctional administration.

You'd expect a man like Doyle to say as much. Those who worked closely with him at head office say otherwise.

But now the "position vacant" sign has gone up and it is understood Doyle has support amongst some commissioners, some of whom were unhappy to see him leave last year.
Club bosses spoken to in recent days say they would embrace him. "He's one of us," offered one. "But would the commission want someone who will tell them some hard facts?"

And that's the thing.

Panthers Group boss Warren Wilson is being touted all over the place, but he's realistically a long shot because he would not be afraid to tell the commission some home truths. He is also too close to Phil Gould, who sparks much paranoia at League Central with the mere mention of his name.

Doyle returned to New Zealand – where he was once boss of the NZRU – to be closer to his family. He is independently wealthy. Would he want to take control of the soap opera?

As others wildly speculated late on Thursday about a possible replacement for Smith, Doyle's name was quietly gathering momentum among those who matter.

That might all change, of course, because 48 hours is a long time in footy.
Are we a realistic chance of losing him here?

No chance. Jin loves a challenge and this one to him is quite personal I'd imagine. Also, he wanted to come back to NZ.

No. Can't find the article but Jim had enough of the Sydney environment and was coming home. I think from memory the article basically implied he would've come anyway and the Warriors job was a happy piece of timing.

Rich is right, it would leave the club in tatters. And even if the CEO gig was something he might desire, he doesn't strike me as a man who does half a job.

I'm hearing pretty strong talk that it'll be the head of the V8s. Lord help us all if it's Greenberg.

SMH coming out with some stories that are rustling Jimmies all over the place - Hayne done, Phoenix to be booted, Doyle poached... aside from the Wallabies, think things are quiet in Straya atm

And now I see Cleary for Aust job... much as I like Ivan, if he coaches the Roos, as long as our TWO halves stay fit, I don't think they'll beat us...

I have a compromise...

Doyle to stay as Warriors CEO....

Wayne Scurrah for NRL CEO...

30 new jerseys for every club!!!

Hahaha.

Although now that I think about it, Scurrah would probably be more suited to the NRL job than a club role... :p

Hope not and I doubt he will. I take it he has a contract. Assuming he wants the job and walked it would open the floodgates right across the NRL. "If the boss can do it so can we"

Usually there will be a 6 month notice clause in exec contracts... although it's the NRL, so who bloody knows!

Actually if they want him bad enough and it is like the Super League we can trade him for a good CEO(albeit not as good as we have),a Coach a few players and a few decent assistants, and maybe a few new jersey designs.

That's the Super League isn't it?

I didn't mean in sports administration... that's general business practice for exec contracts at or above a certain level (generally when you start getting share options in PLCs/equivalent incentive schemes). At least it seems to be the most used time frame in the contracts I've seen.

RLW Mole reporting that Doyle was the NRL's first choice and has definitely knocked them back. They've gone for someone else and essentially got their man.

Despite being asked by the NRL several times to accept the post, Doyle declined, preferring a more laid-back lifestyle in the Shaky Isles to the high profile position as the face of the game.

Not that there was much doubt (at least on my part), but hooray! :)
