Not sure why we would let Thompson go and then pay maybe twice as much to sign Gillett at the same age and again, get into a ridiculous bidding war. Doesn't make much sense to me.
Yeah, this. Gillet is in the top 2 edge backrowers in the game but with Friz on the right and a choice of Sims and Host on the left, and with Ford coming through AND our glaring weakness in the outside backs, paying huge dollars for him would be ludicrous.

Mind you, that’s not why I don’t believe this rumour - started by mickeylane, so inherently untrue!

I have only seen Ford play one game. I liked what I saw. I won't be surprised if he can cement a second row spot next year or the year after. I don't think we should be bothering signing Gillette.

I think that we made Gillette a pretty nice offer when he was off contract last time, so I won't be surprised if there is substance to the Gillette rumour.

We do need a solution to our left side edge. It seems Leilua is still not ready and Sims is now more of a middle forward. Can anyone tell me, do we have coaches that actually take potential first graders to one side and teach them, monitor them and ready them for first grade. How can it be that players like Leilua who have been with us right the the junior system, are selected for first grade but still not ready. Fitness, defensive skills and concentration should be something instilled and controlled by those coaches preparing players for first grade.

I say, don't sign Gillette. Between Leilua, Host and Ford, one of them will cement a second row spot, but they will first have to push Simms out.

If we are chasing Gillette, I say used the money that we are prepared to pay him to chase Pangai and what is left over put towards the rest of our squad. If we get Pangai, we will have the maddest and baddest pack in the comp and we will already have a succession plan to cover when Graham retires.

This is no knock on Gillette. He is a very good edge backrower, but I think we have numerous other young edge backrowers already.

Agreed - building nicely, right balance of experience and youth in our squad and a stack of promising juniors in the pipeline..
