While happy for Gutho and Cook to be co-captains, 2 guys that have only joined this year, it also reflects the lack of leadership of the existing squad that not even 1 of them was made co-captain. Hopefully there are some emerging leaders that will learn under these 2 and are able to step up in the years to come.
100%.. JDB would be the only obvious choice but understandably right or wrong, naming him captain what be a PR / sponsor or should I say a social media disaster for the club. He is in the leadership group anyway

The JDB saga should really highlight how much of an impact it can have in your career if you do the wrong thing. He would have easily been the club Capt in my opinion but his off field incident has stuck and he lost that opportunity because of it. You can see that he would love to be the Capt and would thrive on it but as mentioned above, the media would have a picnic if it happened and smash him and the club throughout it causing sponsors to feel uncomfortable.

When Saints beat Penrith last year, he was capt because or origin and there were no real leaders available and if you see his reaction at fulltime when they won, you can just see how much that meant to him.

Smart - Gal's his media mouth piece. Keep those 2016 guys in his corner and it all helps build the 2025 team.
Not sure that’s the reason he does it.
I think he draws parallels between taking over the sharks and getting them to the top and his current job at dragons.
In many of his podcasts, interviews, he talks about building the sharks and winning the comp, you can tell he’s incredibly proud of it.
Sometimes I do think he could choose his moments, talking about Gallen and Sharks when he’s announcing the new captains for Saints, dunno, I’m not outraged by any means but it happens a lot, that’s all.
I’m Flano we trust but.

Maybe he's trying to get into the head of Captain and King (Cook and Gutho) to get in their heads about he wants from them!

The comp has been won mostly by Cleary, Bellamy, Bennett, Hasler and Robbo in the last 20+ years. Good on Flanno for reminding people especially players that he has won a comp amongst those. If players are serious about winning a comp why not go to a proven premiership winner rather than a coach whose greatest achievement is being an assistant coach to a premiership winner. Especially an glorified assistant that has never coached in England and won a comp there.

There are currently 8 coaches who have won an NRL competition.
Basically half the comp have premiership winning coaches.

In 20 years we had Cleary, Bellamy (2 stripped), Robbo, Flanno, Green, Maguire, Hasler & Sheens (8 coaches) - 15 of the 20 comps were won by only 4 of them. Flanno and Madge are the only 2 left of the other coaches as Green and Sheens are no longer involved in the NRL.

4 of those 8 coaches are in teams that were in the bottom 8 last season. Only 3 coaches premiership winning coaches in the top 8 from last year. It should be an interesting season this year as that is probably the most teams with a premiership winning coach that finished outside the 8 in 2024.

It will be interesting to see if a rookie coach wins it this year but I highly doubt it. I will not be surprised if the 6 sides with premiership winning coaches make the 8 and when it comes to finals it is a different ball game and that is where these coaches will excel.

I reckon Fitzgibbon could be a shot?
How’s their draw though this year? Every year they get the dream draw and make the top 4.
Still, most teams aren’t making the top 4 even with the best draw.
AFB added to their roster is huge and they have some talented young blokes. They’ll be right up there. Outside of Fitzy, I can’t see any other rookie winning?
Only clubs that could win this year IMO are Storm, Riff, Sharks, Broncos.
