I'm sorry to say that Vidot had a shocker in defence.
Father Ted and I led the cheer squad in Vidot's darkest moments at Kogarah, but I found it hard to accept his woeful defensive reads on the wing, resulting in us conceding two tries.
He kept running in, even though the man was covered. Some sort of reflex action, forgetting that there was no one else outside of him.. and leaving an unmarked winger a clear run to the line. We all saw it.
Backline defence 101, I thought.
It was almost like Vidot thought he was a second rower...
Mr Skinner who coached Gladesville Bowling and Sports U/14s in 1978 said to me as a winger ...always stay with your man. That doesn't happen anymore with compressed and sliding defence.
Not that the Vidot miss tonight was much to do with any of that, but both commentators agreed that the marker moving infield (forget who it was) caused both outside defenders to slide in. It was either Quinlan, or Drinky or Fien I was the other. And I would not be surprised if Vidot was instructed to alway stay close alongside the small-man half to assist him.
Agree however, Vidot has further improvement necessary to make on his defence, but I think that is more about reading it properly then effecting a tackle.
I think he should stay in 2nd row and get a fair go there. He hasn't had that especially when compared to the fair go others get in foreign positions. He (Vidot) is clearly not the sharpest chisel in the box, but he has got strength and mongrel. And we all complain that we are missing mongrel in the side. It just Needs to be appropriately developed, and the mongrel encouraged by the coach.
Oh wait... the coach ...oh forget it.
