From Phil Rothfield in todays tele:
THE good news is Cronulla unearthed their most exciting local junior for years yesterday in winger/centre Stewart Mills.
The bad news is that St George Illawarra want him.
Mills is off contract at the end of the season and will speak with the Dragons over the next seven days.
His spectacular debut against the Roosters yesterday probably bumped his price tag up considerably.
This guy is a bit like Manly’s Will Hopoate in that he’s big, strong and has a stack of class. With his very first touch of the football, Mills burst through the Roosters defence, ran 50 metres, and looked set to score before Todd Carney chopped him down from behind.
He eventually got a try seven minutes into the second-half, leaping high in the air to grab the football and then wrestle his way through three Roosters defenders to get it down.
The Sharks put an offer to Mills late last week and are hopeful he’ll stay.
At a club that has lost both front-rowers Kade Snowden and Luke Douglas, the last thing they can afford to lose is their best young local product.
In the dressing rooms afterwards he looked happy enough to remain for life, sitting next to his skipper Paul Gallen as a proud coach Shane Flanagan gave him a special mention in his after game speech and the players burst out in the team song.
“That was just unbelievable,” Mills said, “What a way to start, I’m just so happy.”
