I haven't orgasmed that hard over a debut since Kalyn Ponga last year. Magnificent.

Dufty was superb and probably those extra games in premier league were needed to prepare him. He surely will be the No.1 choice after that performance when Duges is gone. Why wait anyway, just throw him at FB now. 1st game in NRL and Saints score 52 pts. No coincidence. He adds that extra spark in attack Saints were missing.

I can't remember a more impressive debut in recent times? And Manly are bona fide contenders who were in 3rd place at the start of the round.

NRL is a tough business, you either sink or swim. And thankfully for us, Dufty passed his first test.

I rate a guy like Kurt Mann but he has had his chances at FB and in the halves, but he really needed to have that kind of performance to make us all believers. Dufty has the inside running for the FB role next year now and he may not give Mann a chance to stake his claim.

Every time Mann has been chosen at fullback or 5/8 he has lasted 20 minutes due to some sort of injury and moved to wing/centre in saying that Mann is an automatic selection in the 17.

Exactly right Mann never given a chance to be settled anywhere in 1st grade.
He came onto today and as always was very professional and good at what he had to do.
I am quite sure if given the FB role for a month he would also perform very well but good luck to Dufty he cracked it for a spot and did extremely well.
Despite all the howls that it will get I would have Mann ahead of Nighty as I think defensively he will be better due to his pace and I think he could finish off just about all the tires Nighty has scored this year.
Mann does Nighty for pace and would prove a greater adversary to sides trying to get the ball in behind them.

I agree. He's done well for us at wing or centre. Have no problem with him being our long term left wing for instance.

But FB and halves need a different mentality. The best fullbacks are almost predator like when they have the ball. Slater and Barba being the best examples. They have the arrogance to try and make something happen in every play.

I saw a bit of that in Dufty today which has me excited. Field if developed correctly has the potential too, but it's something I fear may be lacking with Mann.

I think with Dufty at fullback, we should have 2 wingers with a bit of size about them. Mann lacks that size.

Agree I think Mann has played his best football with us when he has been on the left wing . If he was to play there week in week out he would develop into a very good winger for us . I think he is a much better all round player than Nighty is now and he has the ability to score long range tries .

Duffy is showing the value of playing a young player in one specialist position and giving him a chance to master it . Dufty should be our fullback from now on . Give him the chance to get up to speed with first grade and he could be anything in the future .

I would now let Dugan play right centre while Aitken is out . They have both been injured a lot this year so work out what to do with the other one when / if they both get on the field together this year .

Yep I'd much rather Mann as wing. Nighty could be utility.

ironically the great game by Dufty today shows just how inept McGregster is, in that he's managed to keep a gun player like Dufty out of the squad all season, over constantly selected pedestrians like Lafai and McCrone ...

Hopefully McG got the message, he has to change brain-dead conservative selections and take advantage of x-factor talent at his disposal.

Our mid-season slump demands tough decisions if we are to be serious contenders ... next on the agenda is to get some zing in our halves and for Jai Field to replace McCrone.

Penshurst RSL junior Matt Dufty stars on NRL debut as St George Illawarra Dragons thrash Manly Sea Eagles 52-22

It has been a long time coming but finally, a star is born.

Matt Dufty starred on his NRL debut as St George Illawarra got their season back on track after thrashing Manly 52-22 on Sunday.

The Dragons had plenty to play for, knowing a loss would have had them slip to the edge of the top eight. They were also without star fullback Josh Dugan with a hamstring strain and lost back-rower Joel Thompson in the warm-up with an ankle injury.

But St George Illawarra rose to the challenge, running in five first half tries in Wollongong to blow away the Sea Eagles to lead 30-0 at the break.

The Dragons looked to be cruising towards their 10th win of the season before Manly briefly breathed life back into the contest. Four quick tries to the Sea Eagles had them trailing 30-22 midway through the second half before St George Illawarra eventually killed the game, scoring a half century of points for the first time in more than a decade.

On debut! Makes it a half century for the @NRL_Dragons.#NRLDragonsManly#NRLpic.twitter.com/E1zx7U3Hsd

Manly themselves were decimated. Already without Api Koroisau (calf), Matthew Wright (hip), Jorge Taufua (knee) and Curtis Sironen (pectoral), Sea Eagles coach Trent Barrett decided to rest five-eighth Blake Green and prop Brenton Lawrence. It appeared a strange decision given Manly have tough games against Melbourne and the Sydney Roosters in the next fortnight.

Not that the Dragons will care, as Dugan’s absence allowed former Holden Cup star Dufty to make his first start in the top grade at fullback.

The Penshurst RSL junior was at his electric, elusive best, helping set up two tries before icing the game in the closing seconds with his first NRL try.

The Dragons got off to a good start when Jason Nightingale and Tim Lafai scored from Gareth Widdop kicks. Then, with Manly on the attack, Widdop produced an intercept from a Daly Cherry-Evans pass to run 90 metres untouched to score.

There are no words to describe this game...

St George Illawarra had their third try from a kick four minutes later, this time with Nene Macdonald climbing above Brad Parker to knock the ball back for Euan Aitken to score.

The Dragons weren’t done, with a Widdop 40-20 giving them more possession which saw Jacob Host crash over from the ensuing set to give the red V an unassailable-looking half-time lead.

Credit to Manly, they refused to put the cue in the rack and had Dragons fans at WIN Stadium more than a little nervous as they flew out of the blocks in the second half.

Dylan Walker scored in the second minute before Darcy Lussick was sent to the sin bin for throwing a punch at Jack de Belin after a minor scuffle with Cherry-Evans. That incident seemed to spark Manly as the Sea Eagles ran in three quick tries through Joey Lussick, Jake Trbojevic and Akuila Uate with Darcy Lussick still off the field.

But just when Manly looked like they might finish over the top of the Dragons, Lussick returned to the field – and normal service resumed. Paul Vaughan charged over after excellent work from Dufty before the 21-year-old threw the last pass for Nightingale to cross for his second try.

Aitken also grabbed his double before Dufty scored the first of what could be many NRL tries, fending off Martin Taupau before holding off Tom Trbojevic to race 35m to send the Dragons fans home with smiles on their faces.

Leader Scoreboard

St George Illawarra Dragons 52 (Jason Nightingale two, Euan Aitken two, Tim Lafai, Gareth Widdop, Jacob Host, Paul Vaughan, Matt Dufty tries. Gareth Widdop eight goals)

defeated

Manly Sea Eagles 22 (Dylan Walker, Joey Lussick, Jake Trbojevic, Akuila Uate tries. Daly Cherry-Evans two, Jackson Hastings goals)

at WIN Stadium, Woolongong

Crowd: 16,883

Leader man of the match: Gareth Widdop (Dragons)

Dragons’ next three: Knights (away), Rabbitohs (home), Titans (home)

We are still all systems go this year BUT
I am salivating about next year.
1/ Widdop keeps oppositions guessing
2/ Hunt keeps oppositions guessing
3/ Dufty keeps oppositions guessing
To have 3 on the Field at the same time. WOW so much unpredictability in our attack for opposition defences to uphold.

I hope the club are looking to get Matt under contract for a few more years ( Signed til end of 2018 ). No Doubt he will be on the radar for many clubs in the NRL.

Dufty starting at full back! I feel like we have had a victory already and the game hasn't started. This is what all of us on the Forum have been campaigning for about 6 weeks. Obviously Mary reads the Forum to get some ideas but doesn't react immediately because he wants to claim the selections as his own. Onya Mary!! Anything else we can help you with?

Go Matt and the Dragons!
If he reads this forum why hasn't he sacked himself??
