Dufty is Shit

I don't want to put pressure on the kid but I guarantee that he will win the Dally M this year, captain Australia to World Cup glory, find Jimmy Hoffa's body and finally negotiate a resolution to the Middle East crisis.

He won't win a State of Origin series though, that's just a bridge too far.

Let's wait and see how Dufty goes in defence, he only had one 1v1 tackle on the weekend and missed (lucky for the cover defence). Yes his attack is good but he needs to improve his defence two fold especially since he is the last line... this is where we will miss Duges the most.

Like our early season form, it sure looked promising, but I kept thinking there's along way to go. Dufty looks promising but has quite a few boxes to tick before we can judge him. I'm just glad he's getting that chance, we sure need a player of his flare

In keeping with OP.

At first it will be "Up the Duff"

Followed by "Stuff the Duff"

Or "Dufty is a nufty"

However, straying from the OP, I really hope he does continue to XL in first grade and cement that spot going forward. He's going to make mistakes thetes no doubt about that and he will have the occassional shocker but it is at these times we need to back him. Defense is a worry but that will improve with experience and natural progression as well as body development.
As long as he keeps his feet on the ground and his head out of the clouds he will be a real good'n.

We've now got what most have wanted for some time.
We have been forced to be patient thus far so now we need to exercise a bit more patience and not instantly jump to unrealistic expectations and make false conclusions.
Dufty is now here he should be and has it all in front of him providing he works hard for it as natural ability isn't quite enough on its own.
From what we have seen thus far he has a good work ethic. isn't selfish and he obviously wants to be the best footballer he can, so all good signs IMO and good luck to him.

Eastview and Belta, I agree 100%. Dufty has shown a heap of potential in his first grade debut, no one is questioning his ability to attack, which is a pleasure to watch. However, attack is only half of the equation and I hope like hell he can show defence to match.

I want to see an electric attack but not if it becomes an under 20 match, I want to see a team that can attack and grit it out when they have to and also be able to belt the opposition into submission with their defence.

I want Dufty to succeed and become the best fullback the game has ever seen, but that wont happen if he can only attack, he needs to show he can defend. I am not even talking about missing some 1 on 1 tackles (he will get bigger and stronger), what I want to see is correct positioning.

Does anyone know if he can drop kick?
Would be great to have an additional option in the GP games as we are severely limited in our ability to win them.
If he can't then crow and humble pie should be eaten and no expense spared to get Soward down to training to teach him.

watching last nights game, made me think of Dufty. Cleary's high deep kicks gave hoppa no room to move. Hoppa who IMO is as strong as any forward in the game was really smashed on a number of occasions. He had no choice but to brace himself for three or four forwards crashing into him. A fullback the size of Dufty will have to show a tonne of courage under the high ball and I'm sure he will. Tough gig this nrl

Ok this post is a joke.but who's laughing .if Matt dufty was playing for almost any other team .no doubt he would have been in first grade a long time . thankfully Mary woke up and realized if your good enough your old enough.

Yeah, exactly. He's going to have issues, all players do. I just hope he doesn't get crucified if/when we lose a game off one of his mistakes.

Already happened to Mann, I wonder what he is thinking at present.
Don't know where the poor guy fits in going forward!
McGregor has really stuffed him up.
CC
Surely he has to at least get Nighty's wing spot in 2018??????
Mc Fookknuckle comes out the other week and states emphatically we must have a starting spot for Kurt because of all the things he brings to the team and the very next minute off to the bench he goes.
Now Mc Fookknuckle is already hedging his bet with Dufty by saying when Aitken comes back in 2 weeks the team will be picked on form which is code for your on your way back to reggies Matthew.
Just when we try to believe Mc Fookknuckle has some balls he sits down to piss again.
He would be far better served by saying absolutely nothing or just saying we will see what happens if and when the time comes.
If Aitken is fit and Dugan is also fit we all know what the outcome will be despite what our illustrious "pull no punches" coach is actually saying.

Harsh on McMary OT, you're very negative, a little depressing and it's speculation on your part.
Totally agree though.
Barring further injuries, when Aitken's fit either Mann, Aitken or Dufty will not make the Bench. Yet Mary keeps saying how important they are to the team. It seems McCrone, Lafai, MacDonald will be there regardless of form.
Still, hope we're both wrong becuase there's a glimmer of hope when he dropped McCrone for 10 seconds and since then there's been improvement from all and he's actually rolling the dice with Duges/Dufty so .... hope he means it when he says "on form".

We will only know if he is really rolling the dice when everyone is available for selection.
IMO he will throw snake eyes.
The Aitken injury is fortuidarse (yes for the pedants I did mean to spell it this way) for Mc Fookknuckle as he has been able to again dodge a bullet about what he would really do re selection.
I can here it now
Well Euan is an established 1st grade player and would have been there barring injuries so he will come straight back into the team.
Duges is an international and is our 1st choice FB so that speaks for itself.
Matthew has done really well with the time he had in 1st grade and will be all the better for the experience.
A little more time in reggies will only make him more hungry seeing he has had a bit of a taste of NRL.

Defence, tackling is not half the equation for a fullback. How many tackles does a fullback make a game on average, Maybe around 5 tackles a game. Even the best defensive fullbacks can get beaten all ends up and made to look silly when they are at the back, all by themselves. Attack is a major part of a fullback's game. Ability under the high ball, cleaning up grubbers, positional play regarding kicks is all as important if not more important than their ability to defend/tackle at the back. Dufty has more speed than Dugan, which gives him an advantage when cleaning up grubbers or getting to a kick on the full in general play. Given a bit of space at the back, Dufty is also a much more dangerous player than Dugan to opposition defence's.

His speed also makes him a much better prospect, when our halves put an attacking kick in. Just think of how many times the likes of Slater and Stewart got to an attacking kick from one of their halves. Dufty should also provide many, many more try assists than Dugan and therefore, should also create much more room for our halves and centres. It has been very rare that Dugan has done that in the last few years.

I am seeing more and more positives about having Dufty at fullback, than Dugan. Dugan's goal line defence and ability to hold a player up in goal are probably his only better attributes than Dufty at fullback.
