The gym floor is less compressed in the morning and steals some of your power as you sink in.

 dunno bout that, but plenty of people waste effort by wearing running shoes to the gym which have exactly that effect on your lifts. Chuck Taylors, Do-Wins or bare feet FTW.

I think you're really splitting hairs if you're worrying about what sort of shoes you're wearing

It makes a differences, runners elevate your heels slightly, which shifts the balance of your weight. It's both bad for your back and it affects your ability to lift.

Thats not necessarily such a bad thing, some lifting specific shoes also have a slight heel. T main problems are that the compressible sole means that a: part of your effort is expended into compressing the sole of the shoe rather than exerting force against the floor, and b: that because you're not planted hard against the floor it allows for more lateral foot movement (ie your feet can rock in your shoe) which is a bad thing particularly when squatting, as it can create excess pressure on the knees. Wear shoes with a dead flat soles (chucks, volleys, ballet or kung fu shoes) and you should easily add 10-20kg to your squat. And it just feels better, do it once and you'll never go back.

Never thought of it like that.

I wear studded futsal type shoes for grip, I'll give the old Vans a crack one time.
