I know the eels have reached the max when it comes to salary cap restrictions but surely this is beyond the ridiculous. The dogs have lost a number of players over the years but they seem to be signing all the good players on the market. Who's next? Probably Michael Crocker. Surely, we will sign someone for the 2010 season and not just a fringe first-grader like Kevin Kingston. I hate to say it but it's about time that stumps were declared on Hindmarsh (hate to say it), Cayless, Cordoba and Finch. That may free up a few dollars (not much though). We need some quality forwards for next year because I don't have high hopes for the forwards running around this year.

I have to disagree about cutting Hindmarsh. He is still one of the best forwards in League. Sure i may be biased but any team would love to have him. He still does plenty if not more than his fair share of work.

why have the bulldogs signed all those players???...I'm sure we'd have plenty of money too had we lost the likes of Tonga, Mason, SBW, Matua, Corey Hughes and O'Mealy in the last couple of years...

Sonny Bill and Mason walked out, and Reni was sacked. That freed over a million dollars a season in salary cap space for the Dogs so it's not use to comparing situations. If you want to get rid of Hindmarsh then you have got to be the dumbest poster in this forum and your opinion is worth less than a grain of salt sorry to say it.

For the record:

You can't just cut a player - their salary still counts.
It is only 'taken off the books' if another club picks them up.

The only other option is to agree to a buyout amount.

Examples:

(1) Cayless (on 400k?) is cut - Souths sign him for 400k. Sweet. OR Souths sign him for 300k - we're still on the hook for 100k, they pay the rest.

(2) A buyout - we say 'take 200k and walk away Caylo' - he does. We have 200k space under the cap.

Harder than you think to simply ditch a contract.

Reni was sacked on disciplinary grounds, so they got some space that way.

As far as SBW and Mason goes - their amount was freed up last season - and the Bulldogs paid Ryan and Patten their 2009 salaries in 2008 - so their salary for this season counted under last seasons cap. I think that is a DIABOLICAL rule for the NRL to have in place - but what it effectively did was free up the salary of SBW, MAson, Matuia, Ryan and Patten for 2009 (not to mention the retirement of Hughes and other players finishing up) - which gave them well over a million dollars to spend.

Anyway - that's why they have so much money to play with this season - basically because Patten and Ryan are "playing for nothing" - in effect they have a 300k player (Ryan) and a 200k player (Patten) on the books but not being paid.
Clever use of the cap by the Dogs, but completely against he principles of the cap to have a team paying $4.7million in salaries when all the rest are only allowed $4.2million.

However, it's what Manly did a few years ago too... before they bought BK and Orford.

It makes me laugh that parra fans are bagging our players so quickly. Cayless is worth every $ he is paid, he would be snapped up by other teams in a heartbeat. Parra will beat Souths this weekend, and all of this will be forgotten again, until we get beaten again. If we get our fair share of the ball at the start of the game (unlike against the Warriors - is it just me, or did they wrestle our guys onto their back EVERY tackle and we never did it once? We need a new wrestling coach, so we can slow down the opposition too) we will beat the rabbits.

I don't have a problem with that rule. Every club front loads or back loads contracts to suit their salary cap needs. That way if the clubs want to re-sign a player but are struggling salary cap wise for the following season they can offer them a 600k 3 year deal, but pay 100k, then 200k, then 300k. The Dogs in this case have a gone a step further and due to Williams and Mason being released pre and mid season they changed the contract structure for the others so their contracts were frontloaded their entire salary last year. It's a smart move really, and given they had to player walkouts they had no time to replace last season, a fair outcome.

Further to that (and agreeing with Eels Dude) ... all that rubbish contributed to them GETTING THE WOODEN SPOON.

I like the Dogs about as much as any normal Eels fan (i.e. not at all), but they've more than paid for the advantage they are enjoying this year.

The crook thing for us is that some of our guys are just sub-par players ... as opposed to deck-heads and mercenaries. If we could sack them or they walked we'd be right.

Except for that fact that, despite getting the spoon last year and having a rookie coach this year, the Dogs still managed to attract decent players. Sometimes I get the feeling that even if we had the money, we wouldn't be able to pick up the best buys anyway. Hopefully Daniel Anderson will contribute to a culture shift that will make the Eels more of a team that good players want to play for.

There's not much point in feeling jealous about other teams have. We have to worry about our own backyard first and foremost.
