The 2001 GF was that one game too many in JTs career, had no legs and the game turned when PJ Marsh went into 7 , oh well memories we needed another 5 minutes to possibly win

Arthur set to get nod at Eels after edging out Taylor

Date
October 6, 2013

Brad Walter, Michael Carayannis

Manly assistant coach Brad Arthur is set to return to Parramatta in the top job, with an announcement expected as soon as Monday.

Arthur, who left the Eels 12 months ago after being unwanted as an assistant to Ricky Stuart, is understood to have been chosen to take over the reins from the Canberra-bound coach next season, with Parramatta sources saying he has beaten Roosters assistant Jason Taylor for the job.

Fairfax Media was told Arthur would be confirmed as the new coach as early as Monday after a final round of interviews were conducted last week.

It is understood Taylor was interviewed on Friday and had the support of some directors after steering the Eels into the 2006 play-offs when he replaced Brian Smith in a caretaker role before two seasons as South Sydney coach. Arthur also briefly coached Parramatta for the final six matches of the 2012 season after Stephen Kearney was sacked, winning two of his first three games.

However, Stuart brought Matt Parish and Dean Pay to the club as his assistants and there was no room for Arthur, who had worked under Craig Bellamy at Melbourne before joining the Eels as Kearney's deputy in 2011.

He was offered the NSW Cup job but rejected it and joined Manly as an assistant to Geoff Toovey.

Arthur just missed out on securing the Cowboys job, with former North Queensland halfback Paul Green getting the nod after the candidates were narrowed to two. He also rejected a chance to join Salford earlier this year.

The Sea Eagles forwards have credited Arthur for instilling some starch into the side's defence. Arthur has worked exclusively with the pack, with accountability his key philosophy. Brent Kite, Matt Ballin and Brenton Lawrence all used the word when describing Arthur's impact. Kite said individualised sessions had helped.

''We've gone off and done our own video reviews and looked at different outcomes, goals and targets we want to hit,'' Kite said. ''Last year it might've been one area we weren't settled in the style of play we wanted to play. Brad has given us a voice in the coaches box. He has backed us all year and has done a great job of holding blokes accountable.''

Kite tells of how he asked Arthur what he was doing following their final training session before playing South Sydney last week. ''He wanted to go and watch tape of the Roosters to get a head start for the week,'' Kite said. Manly leaked an average of 16.8 points last year. That has dropped to 15.3 this season. Lawrence said Arthur's ability to relate to his players had been behind the improvement. ''He is unbelievable,'' Lawrence said. ''He just brings a lot of accountability to the table. He just seems to get the best out of players that are already quality players.''

Hooker Matt Ballin added: ''He has been amazing and has brought a lot of accountability. He has a very simple game plan and if you don't fulfil it he'll want to know how he can help you the next week.''

While he has adjusted seemingly on the field, Arthur has copped some flak away from the training paddock.

''He has that angry head on all the time and [that] makes him a target for pranks and jokes because you always get a nibble out of him,'' Kite said. ''But he is a real good fella and a humble guy.''

The delay in appointing a coach has already cost the Eels one recruit, with St George Illawarra forward Matt Prior signing for Cronulla.

7 news reported Brad Arthur will be named coach on Monday
Channel 8's Yesterday Tomorrow said tonight that Michael Hagan is in the running for the Eels Footy Manager and Stephen Kearney to be his assistant. Apparently their coach of choice has come down to either Paul Langmack or Tommy Raudonikis.

I wish him luck and will 100% support! I am disappointed in signing another rookie though.......

Trent Robinson was a rookie to. And he was sort of appointed to head coach because of player power similar to Arthur (if true)

I know some may laugh but I see us in a similar position to what the roosters were in, in 2012 heading into 2013 (yeah not as much potential as the roosters but still plenty of potential) - we both had a young squad with plenty of potential and both have made some key signings.

2014 could be a great year

Brad Arthur to be named new coach of wooden spooners the Parramatta Eels

David Riccio
The Sunday Telegraph
October 06, 2013 12:00AM

MANLY assistant coach Brad Arthur is poised to take over wooden-spooners Parramatta just 48 hours after Sunday night's Grand Final.

An Eels board meeting on Tuesday is set to ratify the well-credentialed Arthur as the new head coach to replace Ricky Stuart.

Out of respect for both the Sea Eagles and Sydney Roosters build-up to Sunday’s decider, Parramatta chairman Steve Sharp was unwilling to declare Arthur has officially got the job when he spoke to The Sunday Telegraph on Saturday.

Sharp, who is an advocate of Arthur’s potential as a coach, also said any final decision on their new head coach needed to be approved at the upcoming board meeting.

"There’s been four interviews conducted and on Tuesday we’ll convene a board meeting which will determine who gets the job," Sharp said.

"While there hasn’t been a decision made, what I can confirm is that we’ll have a new head coach by the middle of next week."

Tim Sheens, Kevin Walters and Jason Taylor were all considered for the head coaching role, but Arthur finished the interview process, which was completed last week, as a clear front runner and favourite for the toughest job in Australian sport.

While Arthur’s resume includes working under Melbourne Storm premiership-winning coach Craig Bellamy, coaching Melbourne’s 2009 Toyota Cup team to the Grand Final and assisting Geoff Toovey to this year’s Grand Final with Manly, he also has the fundamental and crucial factor required for any coach the support of the players.

It was Parramatta’s most high-profile star, Jarryd Hayne, who publicly declared his support for Arthur only days after Stuart chose to take up an offer to join the Canberra Raiders.

Hayne has worked previously under Arthur, who took over as caretaker coach of the Eels in 2012 for the remaining six games of the season after head coach Stephen Kearney was axed.

Promoted from his role as assistant, Arthur won two of the six matches.

The Manly forward pack have also credited Arthur as the man that has instilled confidence and a relentless attitude towards dominating their rivals.

The Sea Eagles pack have overcome major injury setbacks throughout the entire year to continually play above their weight.

"He has us forwards firing. Like a lot of good coaches, his best stuff is behind-the-scenes working with individuals," Sea Eagles prop Brent Kite said recently.

"Brad is a bit old-school. He has a belief what the forwards can bring to a game and that is something we all like.

"We have had Brad specialising with the forwards this year. That has made a massive difference."

The appointment of their new coach this week will allow the Eels to commence their planning for the 2014 season.

Until now, the club’s bid to move forward has been railroaded by boardroom upheaval, having no coach and only recently appointing a new chief executive in little-known Scott Seward.

The Eels will be welcomed by their new coach when they commence preseason training on November 7 with new recruits Will Hopoate, Nathan Peats, Corey Norman and Brendan Santi all committing to the club despite the recent turmoil.

Jason Taylor will be appointed new Eels coach next week.

Can't wait to see Jason Taylor back where he belongs. With the mighty blue and gold, where he belongs!

Hot hot news from inside... Jason Taylor will be Eels coach and Matt Parish will remain assistant coach on a 2 year deal with a possible 3rd year extension.

Tim Sheens and Peter Sharp in the race for Coaching director or GM of Football Op. That will be announced at a later date..
