In demand ... Matt Orford is keen to return to Australia - and several clubs are keen to have him. Source: The Daily Telegraph

PARRAMATTA will rely on the old pairing of Daniel Mortimer and Jeff Robson after negotiations with veteran halfback Matt Orford were terminated last week.

The Eels were considered short-priced favourites to sign Orford, who is eager to return to the NRL despite being contracted to English Super League club Bradford.
However, talks between Parramatta management and Orford were formally closed last Friday.
It would appear Canberra are now in the box seat to snare Orford. The Raiders are desperate to sign the former premiership-winning No. 7 as a replacement for injured skipper Terry Campese.
But in a further twist, The Sunday Telegraph has learned that Orford is considering sitting out the 2011 season and possibly playing with the Central Coast Bears in an expanded competition in 2012.
While the Eels were unwilling to wait any longer for a decision from Orford, as he strives to gain a release from Bradford, it is believed that instability at the Parramatta club over the past 18 months contributed to the 32-year-old's reluctance to sign on the dotted line.

Either way, Orford joins a long miss-list of Eels targets - including retired veterans Trent Barrett and Brett Kimmorley, rugby union stars Quade Cooper and Craig Gower, and representative stars Cooper Cronk and Braith Anasta - to have knocked back the besieged club over the past six months.
New Eels coach Stephen Kearney spoke with Mortimer and Robson recently, telling them that the job of steering the club back to the finals was there next season if they wanted it.
Mortimer's father and former Canterbury legend Peter said it was up to Daniel to make the most of the opportunity offered by Kearney.
"Time will tell," Peter said of his son's ability to shine next season.
"I haven't spoken to Stephen Kearney, but everyone I've spoken to speaks very highly of him.
"So if he's made the decision to go with Daniel and Jeff, then they're going to have to perform up to his expectations.
"The ball is in both the boys' court now.
"I can see Daniel's attitude just in the last four weeks has been a little bit more driven."

well, apart from offering up a few other alternatives, like Brad Murray, or even left field alternatives like Jarryd Hayne at 5/8 - i have also said recently it looks a lot like this will be what happens in 2011.......just need to make the best of it and hope they can turn things around, but i guess Morts 6 and Robson 7 is the best option with those two

and both Morts and Robson will know that there are 2-3 young guys and Casey McGuire waiting to take their spots if they don't perform as i don 't think Kearney will muck around and stick by them all year.....especially if the quote was accurate saying its their job if they want it......meaning show us you want it......also don't be surprised if Anthony Mitchell is also considered for the halves...

trial form will also have a lot to say as although Keraney is offering them the job in the halves as incumbents, he might also think there are better alternatives, so they have to win it and show him they deserve to be there

p.s the business with Orford not wanting to sign because of instability.....i think that is a beat up - if he is that desperate to come home and play in the NRL at 32, you would think he would just sign - and if its true, well stuff him, he doesn't deserve to be an EEL......

Well we must land a siginficant 7 like Cronk etc in 2012 - there will be no excuses, we have the money.

i say let him have the World Cup next year and chase hard after Quade Cooper
poor defence or not (and you can always teach a bloke how to tackle) i think he has tremendous skills and would be a good 5/8 or halfback with the right training in Rugby League

Parra1947.....

although i'm now happy to have a new coach and the bloke we picked, i like your signature at the bottom, the players have a lot to answer for

many of them need to stop reading the papers or supplying the papers when we are going good and realise its an 80 minute game and a 26 week competition

5 mins of sparkling footy doesn't make a season

Early tip:

Brad Murray: Rookie of the year. History repeats itself. This preseason is so much like the pre season of 2005.

We should just get new junior halfbacks every year and throw them away afterwards as they all suffer from 2nd year syndrome

I really like the part "their job if they want it"; basically means that if Robson and Mortimer don't give it their all and succeed then others will be sniffing around for a spot.

If I was going to settle on a young halfback as a risky option, I'd take Brad Murray so far.

Well that was a big surprise....

Chasing players that are contracted and have clubs publicly stating they won't give releases is a bit of a fools quest.

Would have been better if Ossie had conducted his search for a half quietly instead of through the media, raising fan expectations?

(That's assuming from his previous quotes on the matter that is was Ossie's job to do the recruitment of a half - because occasionly we are assured on here and by Roy Spags that recruitment is the coach's job, and the coach should be solely to blame...)

Regardless of whether he would be an asset or not, the part about the club's "instability" being a put-off, shows that all the boardroom fiascos over the last 18 months or so, means that the club doesn't look like a great prospective employer.

Not a good situation.

18 months? Try 27+ months, when you count all the lead-in to 2008's FC elections in December.

I think we all know that Roy is 'flexible' with the truth.

In-fact, calling him flexible is probably being nice.

Glad we didn't get him. Hope we can get Cronk in 2012. I have to say we haven't had any stability since Brian Smith left. Would love to see kearney stay for more than 2 years & give him the chance to build something here!

Some people haven't yet realised that about him HD, and take issue with people spotting it. Be careful...

last year our options where mortimer/robson and Humble
This year it will be the same plus Murray-Bruest-Mcguire..Yes untried but atleast more options there.Mortimer will come good as 5/8th support player.Hayne will do the ball playing for him and mitchell will add spark from dummy half off the bench.Mcguire can be used as starting hooker for a bit of leadership... Id give Humble first crack at half back

Why does everyone keep saying we can get Cronk for 2012. He's not off contract until 2014. If Melbourne weren't going to release him this year with their salary cap dramas they certainly aren't going to be releasing him early next year.
