Parramatta coach Michael Hagan says he'll have no hesitation rushing back injured fullback Luke Burt, even if it means disrupting a winning combination.
The third-placed Eels maintained the gap between them and the chasing pack with a 34-22 win over the Bulldogs at Telstra Stadium on Friday night, Parramatta now within sight of securing home ground advantage in the first week of the NRL finals.
The win was sealed by a spectacular Krisnan Inu four-pointer just before fulltime - the Kiwi rookie continuing to stamp his claims for a permanent berth in the Eels backline with another breathtaking display.
But with Jarryd Hayne, Ben Smith, Timana Tahu and Eric Grothe already firmly entrenched in the outside backs, Inu is facing the very real prospect of being the fall guy when Burt makes his expected return from a dislocated kneecap in the final regular season game against Brisbane.
Burt was in career-best form before his unfortunate injury, Hagan admitting he owed it to the 26-year-old to give him every chance to reclaim his No.1 jumper.
"There's no question about that - he's been an integral part of what we've done and I'm not about to forget what he's contributed," Hagan said.
"My attitude is something normally works itself out - that's been the case nearly all year and we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.
"We've been lucky to have Krisnan and Joel Reddy come in and you always need one or two blokes to complement the five starting blokes.
"Luke was in great form before he went down - he was the (NRL's) leading pointscorer ... he's not due back for another three or four weeks and a fair bit can happen between now and then."
As luck has had it, Hagan hasn't had to make the hard decision yet.
Inu has already made 13 appearances this season with a hamstring injury to Tahu creating the initial opening. When Tahu returned it was Ben Smith who succumbed to injury to give Inu a reprieve before Burt went down against Newcastle in round 17.
While Inu's continued good form would have pleased Hagan, so too would his side's effort after the break.
The Eels have been slow out of the blocks from the restart in recent weeks, Hagan admitting he tinkered with his lineup in a bid to halt the worrying trend.
"We just changed our rotation a little bit with a couple of our senior guys on there after halftime," he said.
"I think the players have taken that on board and they're obviously wanting to finish games stronger than we have been and it was a great test of that against Canterbury."

I wonder if it would be worth playing Inu on the bench, he is too good for PL

Im not sure if this would work but im just throwing it out there. Ben Smith starts at centre, Inu comes off the bench to play hes position and when he does that Ben Smith moves to the backrow.

that would probably be our only option of slotting one of the backs into the forward pack

probably cause a bit of imbalance, but surely Inu is too good for PL

It might im not sure, i cant think of any other way to get all our backs in first grade. Imagine Inu/Marsh coming on 15 mins before halftime together, theyd cause alot of problems for the opposition.

the thing is.. when tahu goes.. inu slots in there.. so even if you do move ben smith to say lock, next season hes back in the centres which is really useless long term..

but saying that.. i rekon benny would be awesome in the middle of the park.. him , hindy, robbo and cayless would be a very bruising defensive team..

and its not as if ben would go missing in the hit ups either.. hes 100kg+.. he could easily cover playing in the backrow

BUT.. playing INU inside of Grothe.. would be suicide... there both a lil sus in defence.. and ben smith does alot of defence that goes un-noticed when helping out grothe.. i would go as far as saying we would leak even more points down that right side

I dont know if Ben runs hard enough and uses his size well enough to move into the backrow. Defensively he could handle it though

If for some reason Ben Smith isn't there I think you'd see Tahu go to that side of the field, with Inu and Hayne on the other.

The only other option would be to kepp the Inu-Tahu combo and move Jarryd to right centre. I think he'd handle it easily.

I have been a big fan of Ben Smith - he's usually a rock for us in the backline - but he's not defending as well as normal and that makes him in the worst form of the 6 players contesting for positions.

Grothes defence has been worse tbh.

I'd stick Burt back at fullback and Hayne back onto the wing in place of Grothe.
Can't believe I just said that.
Inu just HAS to be in there somewhere.

I thought you'd piss Tahu off Suit? lol

Seriously though, Inu has to start in the backline for mine. He has proven he is already one of our best, and he has that ability to score from nothing, which not to many people have, and may be invaluable in the finals.

it's a nice problem to have....

how to slot the senior guys in burt, caylo and wagon into the 17.

Good point about the other guys.
Wellar and Paulo have been a revelation in their short stints.

And then there is Josh.

Are we building to something really big here?

I'm not going to state the obvious, like "Who's going to the World Club Challenge"?

Yeah good point.

Guru is great for a game-breaking play though, Ben Smith is not.

It's just that Guru's game-breaking plays could go either way :D .

I think you're right though. In a one-off game I'd feel safer with Ben Smith and Hayne on the right.

Look, the only thing that worries me about my suggestion is Burt's "safety" at fullback.
I think Haynes defence is better, and he is better under the highball back at fullback.
But Burt is a better support player up the middle, and is a points scoring machine.

Guru is a magnificent yards burner, taking pressure off the forwards, but the defensive frailties on the right over the past 6-8 weeks has me worried when we come up against great teams in the semis. It is no secret now amongst other clubs that our right side is our weakness.

I just think, for safety reasons, that Burt -fullback, Hayne wing is a better option.
Only just though.
