Yeah depth players add depth. Backup players are only used in emergencies. Genuine top 17 players are neither of these.

Whats the difference between 'depth' and 'adds depth'?
As an example, Junior Paulo “adds depth” because he takes a top 17 spot, pushing a player previously in the 17 out of it. This effectively strengthens our overall roster by improving the standard of our fringe first graders...or depth players if you will.

You could also say that signing a fringe first grader "adds depth", couldn't you?

You've just referred to them as "depth" players. An extra one of those adds depth, surely?

Every single player adds depth. Saying that about a player is a very vague indicator of how much they're being paid.

You absolutely could, which is why Arthur’s comment is not really a good indicator of what Evans’ salary might be.

Its a reasonable one in my mind. It implies they aren't expecting them to be a superstar. Saying that a gun new signing "adds depth" is almost insulting. I don't think BA ever expected Evans to be a world beater. Did he pay Evans more than he is worth? Maybe, but I'm not sure any of us know that.
