Eels in the media

But there are pages and pages of sarcastic gloom and doom. You'd think that we were a lay down misere for the spoon. This is the Eels Fan forum, however there is more negativity here about our own team than the general NRL forum.

That's because we haven't won a freakin premiership in 34 years mate and the bloke in charge maybe passionate and a Parra man, but doesn't seem to be able to get us there. We haven't improved to the point that we actually have a chance against the hot sides.

We can all see that we are just making up the numbers and the type of footy we play maybe good enough to beat the lower team mostly but isn't anything to get excited about. We always look like we are struggling to score points and hold teams out and barely win the game in the end. And I can tell you if we played like we are now from the start of the year, there is no way we would of ended up in the top 8. Would of been lucky to be 9th or 10th.

Not inspiring stuff to watch as a fan no matter where we end up on the ladder. Especially since we have so much talent in the roster and what we saw we were capable of in the first half of the year.

So it is a bit much reading all you "the glass half full" guys when the facts are we are playing well within ourselves and that the coach has to wear the majority of the blame for that. So it is what it is mate.

We stink and the coach is gunna cop it. Deal with it!

Nah we won 4 of our last 6.

Plus we scored 24 against Storm last week. Do you know who has scored more than 24 vs Storm this year ? Nobody.

Roosters scored 25 in Round 8. Dragons scored 30 in Round 20 (albeit against a second string side).

Yeah you hang your hat on that mate. One game in what 11 that we seemed to be actually creative in attack somewhat. Still lost and really badly in the end when you look at the game for what it was, a total dismantling of our defense and domination of the ruck. But hey, we scored enough points to keep the simply pleased fan happy.

More power to you buddy. I suppose it is a little like religion. Bliss no matter what for those that believe. In God we trust. For those that don't, well lets just say reality sometimes really sucks and then sometimes it doesn't and that is what makes life more precious and meaningful.

But ultimately there are no excuses. Life is too short. Professional sport is a results driven business. Our results are somewhat flattering due to the stellar start to the season, so BA will get a pass for the top 3 finish to the regular season. But most long term fans will give him an "F" for the way we ultimately got there and our soon to be realised straight sets exit.

A realisation for many eels fans to think again, in BA we can't and don't trust.

Miserable SOB. Take your negativity elsewhere. We're 3 games away from being Premiers FFS.

Should the coach cop the blame? Just because he's the one doing press conferences doesn't mean he's the one responsible for football operations or the funding that requires. He can only work with the team he's got and I think we overachieved this year. If we lose to Souths we'll still be top six, which is where I expected us to finish.

BA represents the raisins in the pudding. Still plenty of other ingredients required before you can bake something. Even if all you think we have baked this year is a shit cake.

To become the type of team you want us to be then changing the coach alone won’t get us there.

I don’t say this because I think we should keep BA as coach, but rather to highlight that if you are banking on this as a sure fire way to improve then I think you might be disappointed (again!). Particularly if we replace BA with another middle of the road coach.

Who gives a toss about his press conferences? It's the results of what they are doing on the field that matters mate and since the second half of the season we have basically been absolute shite compared to most teams in the comp even though we finished 3rd.

You are obviously a very negative merkin, cos I expected us to win it once I saw what our potential was early in the season. Which from now on is what I expect to be the case every year from our club. We are one of the most powerful overall clubs in the NRL. We should almost always be a realistic contender. But the way we have been playing right this minute who thinks that today?

If someone did an analysis of all the clubs in the comp, pros and cons, I'm sure we would end up being one of the top 3 or 4 clubs.

Only the Broncos, Melbourne and Roosters are in our class over all right across the board and one could argue that the Storm in reality are slightly behind us if it weren't for their coach and his stellar recruitment over the past 15 years or so and the fact that they have been lucky enough to have cheated the cap which allowed them to accumulate some of the best players of the generation including a GOAT. I suspect that once both coach and the GOAT retire, we may just leap frog them to 3rd position in the overall pecking order.

In no particular order. We have equally best leagues club. We have equally best stadium. We have top 3-4 best player nurseries. We have top 3 most supporters. We have one of the most stable and best run admins. We have a city that is on the rise and expanding its financial base and reach as we speak. Within 5 years our business footprint will be bigger then North Sydney's and 3rd or 4th largest in the country.

So I expect to be winning GF just like the Roosters, Storm and Broncos do. When we have a bad year, I expect the media to be losing their collective heads like they have been with the Broncos because it is to out of character, not to simply think oh well that is Parra, Dr Jeckyll and Mr Hyde. We are now a destination club. But the question remains. Is the coach a destination coach? If we have a similar season or heaven forbid a worse one next year, I fear that all this growth will have largely been wasted.

No I expect to win it. No excuses. And if we don't the coach, players and recruitment need to be assessed big time and action should be brutal.

34+ years should never have happened to this club. They better get it right for next year or my criticism will be merciless.

No excuses.

I’d love for us to win but expecting it only leads to heartache and disappointment.

At least we’ve stopped being a f**ken laughing stock and don’t have factions destroying us.

Whatever happens after this year with our coach and squad I am confident that we will continue to improve as a club and be a force over the next 10 years.

Panthers will be THE TEAM of the next decade though. They are about to become Melbourne and the Roosters combined.

Replacing the coach is a start mate. Who said we should get another mediocre coach? I have already stated that I think we should get Bennett. He knows how to get the best out of a good roster. Hell look what he has done for Souths very average pack of forwards.

Short of that I would go for Freddy for the reasons I have stated previously on this forum.

Bennett - Big yes.

Freddy - Not convinced.

As a coach he can't be any worse then BA. But what he brings that BA will never ever do is massive media attention and clout. And his ability to bring in quality resources, from sponsorships to coaching personnel to the highest level of mentors to assist and call on.

He is not the same guy that coached the Roosters all those years ago. He even said so not so long ago and thinks he would be so much better now as a NRL coach. I think he would be the best coach signing since Brian Smith hands down. He would also be the type of coach that can make it fresh and interesting every year. He is an innovating type that is always looking at improving and changing. An ideas kind of guy.

If it were up to me I would go hard for Freddy.

We've all had enough carrot cake, mate. We now want some magic pudding.
