How much quality coaching was actually given to the players.

By the sounds of it not much.

Across 11 years I don't recall many games where I reckon we looked like a well drilled or coached side for a lot of it.

A lot of the wins in that period where we were making finals were off the back of effort, talent or individual brilliance.

Semi in 2017 and Hayne in 2014 certainly won us some games off there own individual brilliance.

You can't argue the roster we had in 2017-2022 that we overachieved that roster was built to challenge for the title in that period.

And we only made 1 preliminary final in that period and won a wooden spoon.

I say we got plenty of cheap wins were accumulated despite not playing to our potential against some piss poor teams in a period of covid rule change 2020-2021 where the gap between the bottom of comp to the top 6 rose massively.

The coach's job is coaching. Not pathways, not recruitment/retention, not contract negotiations, not fundraising, sourcing TPAs, player welfare, strength and conditioning, not tackling or even catching the ball. Just coaching. That means player development, tactics and preparing the team each week. The head coach does this by communicating with the players and coaching staff the club give him.

I reckon the biggest thing a coach can do and what seperates the best from the average ones are coaches that are mentors. Ones who inspire the players mentally and make them better people. Nothing to do with playing the game and tactics which most coached would share a similar knowledge.
Teaching these young men discipline and giving them guidance. Having them realise they are lucky to have this opportunity and not to take it for granted.
It's what makes Bellamy,Wayne and Ivan great. Players look up to them.

We always towards the end of BA time looked bereft of ideas, the endless amount of crash plays close to the line and our over reliance on the offload is evidence of that.

So our strengths didn’t suit the modern game??
They suited the modern game until 2024. We've had one bad year and suddenly you think we've been shit forever.
So we knows it’s not the coaches job or fault so who was to blame??
To blame for what? We had three years of being above average, one year of being average and one year where we were below average. We are still well ahead of the rest of the comp. We don't need a scapegoat, but if you want one, we just had the coach and a bunch of senior players shitcanned.
