Phil ‘Buzz’ Rothfield reveals true worth of your NRL playing roster
The NRL salary cap is not achieving what it is supposed to, writes BUZZ ROTHFIELD, and here’s the proof – the real valuations of 520 players across the 17 clubs. CHECK YOUR CLUB’S WORTH

The NRL salary cap is not achieving what it is supposed to.
And here’s the proof – the real valuations of 520 players across the 17 clubs. Every player, every club.
The cap was introduced 35 years ago in 1990 to stop struggling old Sydney clubs from recklessly overspending and going broke like Newtown, the Wests Magpies and North Sydney Bears.
For that it has served its purpose.
However, it was also designed to level the playing field and stop the richest and most powerful clubs from those days like Manly and the Roosters from pinching all the superstars from rival clubs.
All these years later and it’s not working – or not like it was supposed to.

Every club might be spending the same amount of money ($12.3 million) but we hardly have a level playing field – as shown in the opening round of the competition where we had blowout scores and an average win margin of 18 points.
It doesn’t happen every week but it happens.
There is no cap on junior development spending which allows the richer clubs to stockpile the best rookies.
This is why the AFL uses a draft where the bottom sides each year at least get first picks for the best talent. Not that it’s perfect because they have lopsided scores too but it helps the strugglers.
Everyone knows you have to finish in the top four to win a grand final.
It’s been 13 years since the Bulldogs made the top four, 14 years the Wests Tigers, 15 years the Dragons and Titans and 19 years the Knights.
This isn’t an attack on the weaker clubs or the game in general but more an illustration of how professional and how well managed the likes of Storm and Penrith are.
Last week I sat down with colleague Brent Read to value every player at every club in the top 30 lists. Not what they are getting paid, but what they are actually worth.
The rest somehow need to life themselves to that level through good management.
It showed up a significant gulf between the best and worst sides.

Melbourne Storm play St George Illawarra this weekend with a roster that in our opinion is worth $4.5 million more than the Dragons.
• Three clubs are worth more than $14 million – Storm, the Brisbane Broncos and four-time premiers the Penrith Panthers.
• Four clubs are worth less than the salary cap – the Dragons, Cowboys, Eels and Warriors.
So how do we finish up with such a difference in roster quality when every side spends the same amount of money.
So how do we finish up with such a difference in roster quality when every side spends the same amount of money?
Now let’s be fair dinkum here.
Some clubs cheat better than others. The chances of getting caught are minimal.
Some clubs have more third-party opportunities in big corporate cities like Melbourne and Brisbane where they don’t have to share the spoils like nine Sydney clubs do in the harbour city.
Some clubs develop juniors better than others. Some clubs have smarter recruitment staff.
The stronger clubs can pay ‘unders’ because they have player magnets like Craig Bellamy, Wayne Bennett, Phil Gould/Cameron Ciraldo and Ivan Cleary at organisations where players are more likely to become better footballers and make rep sides.

Not everyone can rebuild as quickly and as impressively as the Bulldogs.
The weaker clubs show no patience, panic buy and pay more to attract quality footballers.
We’ll use the Dragons as an example.
Boom prop Stefano Utoikamanu went to Storm for $200,000 less than he could have got by joining Saints or staying at the Wests Tigers. It was the Bellamy attraction.
The Dragons signed Clint Gutherson ($850,000) and Valentine Holmes ($1.1 million) during the off-season but we have valued them at far less than that.
The valuations show a stack of million-dollar players, like Holmes, who are not playing to their price tags.

The $13 million man Dylan Brown is actually ranked as a $780,000 player – and that’s being kind to him on what he has displayed so far this season.
• David Fifita is on $1 million at the Gold Coast Titans but has been valued at $580,000.
• Nicho Hynes is on $1 million at the Sharks but is valued at $750,000.
• Latrell Mitchell is on $1.1 million at the Rabbitohs but we suggest he’s like an $850,000 player on what he has produced in recent years.
• And Jake Trbojevic is probably a $750,000 player at the Manly Sea Eagles, not $1 million.
The rosters analysis shows how much stronger the Wests Tigers are looking since the arrival of chief executive Shane Richardson.
The rosters analysis shows how much stronger the Wests Tigers are looking since the arrival of chief executive Shane Richardson.

They’ve jumped from 17th on the valuations ladder to 10th on the back of signing Jarome Luai, Terrell May, and Sunia Turuva plus the incredible improvement of Lachlan Galvin, who we now rate a $900,000 player. Plus Jahream Bula and Samuela Fainu have increased sharply in value.
Melbourne Storm have gone to the top of the ladder from 8th last year via the improvement across the side, especially through the likes of Jack Howarth, Eliesa Katoa and Tyran Wishart who were rated around the $350,000 mark at the beginning of last season.
And no shock in that champion Penrith halfback Nathan Cleary ($1.6 million) and Newcastle Knights superstar Kalyn Ponga ($1.5 million) are the highest-ranked players.

How did our recruitment guru go after 2021/2022 seasons, finals and GF and followed by awful talent identification,
Well that is the mass debated topic on here isn't it ? Everyone thinks they know who is at fault. Some say it's the board or CEO or R&R or the coach who gave direction and had final say to all decisions.

If anyone says they know, I don't believe you.

These days good things are happening and Ryles gets pats on the back. Bad things happen and it's on the R & R or Jim.

If anyone says they know, I don't believe you.

Post 2022 GF was a clusterf**k in recruitment and retention and we regressed on the table and in the marketplace because of it. That's a fact .

One guy who got paid the big bucks to be the footy brains of the organisation got sacked (apparently) because of it. That says something. It might say that he was at fault or it might say that other people are covering their arses.

If anyone says they know, I don't believe you.

The process was flawed in a sense, the CEO appeared to be appointed as he came from Ferrier Hodgson and would institute procedure and keep the club in order.

He then appointed the HOF, understand we had plenty of applications as at the time it was highly sought after with some experienced operators in the mix, the CEO appointed someone with no previous experience in recruitment but had numerous tertiary and business qualifications, That was more in line with his experience in the corporate sector.

Unfortunately it doesn’t seem to work in the sports area, as results indicate. Then hiring someone to assist in that area with a similar low profile despite being around list management, wasn’t a high enough name it appears to make a difference.

Anyway, we toil on, but it’s obvious we need a change of fortune and I hope the current staff manage it, as that would turn the club around with sensible and targeted elite recruits. Fingers crossed .

From a club perspective being ranked by agents as hard to deal with would be a good thing. It means you aren't necessarily getting arse reamed by the agent easily.
Is it really ???

So the Top 3 for worse rated are Tigers, Dragons, Eels

So if those clubs ain't getting reamed by the agents which by then pissing off the player agents must be contributing to all the success they have had. Not getting there salary cap out of shape.

Between the other 2 clubs the Tigers & Dragons have 2 finals appearances between them since 2011.

It goes a some way to explaining why those 2 x teams are bottom half of the ladder most years.

Them 2 are poorly run organisations. Who ain't either organised or couldn't run a chook raffle.

Are we as bad probably not but i think it reinforces we still have a shitload of improvement to do.

I have said for a long time MON lacks any presence in the game & same as our CEO.

We have no pull as a club. No one in the media pushing our barrow instead just scoffed at who would want to go there.

How are the Raiders seen as more attractive to play for then us in RL Heartland in the greatest city in the world.

You only have to look at the Raiders & Warriors who are mid-tier clubs and how they are rated by managers as two of the best 3 clubs to deal with in the game.

Well I guess it all depends on what the criteria to determine what "best" is, at least from a Player Agents perspective.

Well those 2 clubs i mentioned are ahead of the Roosters.

And we know Uncle Nick wines and dines everyone he wants so there must be more to it.

Otherwise why would agents say like dealing with the Raiders and Warriors instead of the Chooks for a free lunch and side kicks.

Is it communication.

Do they have the best operators and act professionally to just things done.

Maybe it's not the people we have but its the process in place.

Proof will be in the pudding in the next 12-18 months with recruitment.

MON and the CEO can't survive 2 coaching tenures and blame the coach again.

I would be moving at least one of them on first before Ryles if things are still going poorly this time next year with onfield results

The Raiders can't get any decent player to go to their club and Ricky has had to buy Poms or more recently every junior ever to play U18 origin.

Their identification and negotiations are superior to ours despite their location. Topine, Young, Starling, Tamale, Weekes, Savage, Strange, Horsburgh and the pommie recruits who are better than most of our fwds and I left a few out that they’ve signed. So who’s doing it better, anyway keep trying and there are some issues that are indefensible.

Whatever the criteria is, we just aren’t t good at recruiting for the past 5 years, that’s the reality. Truth hurts and we need to get better by some measurement. No good being an identifiable good club with resources, membership, facilities , sponsorship etc if you can’t identify and close deals. Sometimes closers are the most important people to sell your story and settle the deal. That’s in any industry or sport, we don’t t appear to do that at all well, certainly not to the standard of our peers.

You've taken what I said out of context. What I said was pertaining to their "ratings" with agents.

I never compared their recruitment success to ours, silly billy.

Are the Raiders/Ricky that good at identifying players.......

Last 4 years Canberra have finished 10th, 8th, 8th and 9th. Eels have finished 6th, 4th, 10th and 15th.

Maybe the Raiders after 4 pretty average seasons, just had some decent cap space to make some quality signings (including signing some promising juniors which aren't cheap)....Just like the eels after 2 average seasons, now have a pretty decent amount of cap space to make some quality signings.....

If that’s the case and I hope it is, let’s see how we go with quality signings, we should be a destination club so no pressure .

Interestingly it seems Raiders under Ricky aren't that great at staying at the top end of the table.

Between 2015 and 2022, they have finished 10th, 2nd, 10th, 10th, 4th, 5th, 10th, 8th.

They have never been able to sustain a consistent finish towards the top of the table. Only finishing top 6, 2 years in a row once and only 3 times total.

The same period, we finished top 6, 5 times, with a 4 year period of finishing top 6.

@hindy111 did say 12 months ago the raiders have been recruiting the best young talent going around.

Kaeo Weekes, Ethan Sanders, Chevy Stewart, Ethan Strange, Owen Pattie that's a pretty good young spine if they keep them all together and fit over the next 5-10 years with the growth & experience around them.

Then you got speed in Savage and outside backs like Timoko & Tamele who are young and strong who break the line.

Plenty of quality forwards pushing through the grades as well.

I like what the raiders are building its a shame they have a narcissistic wanker coaching them that's hard to like.
