Eels to wear high-tech jumpers
By Dean Ritchie
February 20, 2004
THE Parramatta Eels will wear a revolutionary stay-cool football jumper this season that took nine years to develop and weighs just 280 grams.
"The recent trend has been for clubs to have the snugger-fitting jerseys," said Eels coach Brian Smith.
"This probably goes to the next level."
A traditional polyester of cotton jumper weighs about 700g.
The jumper's manufacturer has used an infra-red imaging camera allowing the fabric's hot spots to be measured.
There are also modifications made to the cut of the jersey, the composition of the yarn and the knit of the fabric.
"This new jersey is all about player comfort," Smith said.
"It has a tremendous cooling affect. The honeycomb design does not hold any water - whether it be sweat or rain.
"Basically, what this jumper does is fit without restrictions."
The jumper also offers:
* A high friction fabric surface.
* Stretch knit to provide comfort.
* A new slimmer garment cut - developed to maximise skin surface contact.
* Fabric that does not hold water. Old-style wet jumpers could weigh up to 2kg.
Parramatta skipper Nathan Cayless said his teammates are considerably cooler in the Classic Sportswear jersey.
"We have tried the new jumpers during the trials and Sevens and all the feedback is positive," Cayless said.
Parramatta will wear the jumpers in a trial match against the New Zealand Warriors tomorrow night on the Gold Coast.
Next weekend, the Eels step out for another trial against the Wests Tigers at Campbelltown.
Parramatta: Luke Burt, Wise Kativerata, Jamie Lyon, David Vaealiki, Eric Grothe, Daniel Wagon, Adam Dykes, Adam Peek, John Morris, Michael Vella, Nathan Hindmarsh, Nathan Cayless, Luke O'Dwyer, Wade McKinnon, Craig Stapleton, Corey Pearson, Aaron Cannings, James Webster, Jeremiah Pai, Junior Langi.
