The rule was originally brought in after teams were using the tactic of purposely kicking the ball too long over the dead ball line in order to stop the fullback from being able to run it back. You give up a 20m tap, but you get your team set in a defensive line so no broken play.
I believe it started with Jamie Soward and the Dragons when Bennett was coach.

Problem is when they brought the 7 tackle rule in, it became a blanket rule for any time a 20m tap is taken.
So now a short grubber goes dead by one bounce = 20m and 7 tackles.
Miss a field goal = 20m and 7 tackles.
Drop the ball over the line = 20m and 7 tackles.
Cop a bad bounce when going for a 40/20 and the ball just nudges the upright in the process of going over the sideline = 20m and 7 tackles.

The NRL has no foresight whatsoever.
The rule should be changed so that it is a 7 tackle set only when you kick it dead from outside the 20m line.

under the old top 8, this would have been the match ups

Storm v Cowboys - in Melbourne
Roosters v Panthers - in Sydney
Broncos v Manly - in Brisbane
Parra v Sharks - in Sydney

Dreamt last night we won 30-18. When we score tries they will have to be with no possibility of the refs or Bunker imagining things to not award. They will be doing their best to make up something.

I am pretty sure the bunker is currently being installed in Cameron Smith's spare room as we speak. His wife and family will be in charge of the red and green button this week. Don't worry - they will be fair and impartial.

Better would be to assess our results against each opposition weighted by where they finished on the ladder.

You asked and I have delivered.

I weighted wins as follows:

Beat 1st placed team - 8 points
Beat 2nd placed team - 7.5 points
Beat 3rd placed team - 7 points
Beat 4th placed team - 6.5 points
Beat 5th placed team - 6 points
Beat 6th placed team - 5.5 points
Beat 7th placed team - 5 points
Beat 8th placed team - 4.5 points
Beat 9th placed team - 4 points
Beat 10th placed team - 3.5 points
Beat 11th placed team - 3 points
Beat 12th placed team - 2.5 points
Beat 13th placed team - 2 points
Beat 14th placed team - 1.5 points
Beat 15th placed team - 1 points
Beat 16th placed team - 0.5 points

The revised table ends up looking like this:

Despite not playing as many top 8 teams as others, we still beat plenty of them and therefore finished 2nd. The Raiders and the Dragons also slip into the top 8 by virtue of some of their performances against better sides. The Titans also moved up considerably due to some solid wins over the likes of Parra and the Storm.

What does it all mean? F**k all really...

That is great work gutful. You even bolded the top teams. Probably the most creative, thought provoking, well set out piece of work I have ever seen on this forum. The fact that it mean sweet f**k all is neither here nor there. Outstanding
