BURT STARS AS EELS PROVE TOO STRONG FOR ROOSTERS
Saturday 1 March 2008

Fullback Luke Burt has capped a solid comeback from knee surgery scoring 14 points in the Pirtek Parramatta Eels 34-18 win over the Sydney Roosters in their NRL trial match at Bluetongue Central Coast Stadium Gosford.

Burt scored a try and kicked five goals from six attempts as the Eels ran out comfortable six tries to three winners.

Head coach Michael Hagan said Burt’s performance was one of a number of highlights to come out of the match.

“He (Burt) was a bit nervous before the game, as was Nathan Cayless, but I think that will do him the world of good to get through it and get through it well,” Hagan said.

“We came here to get our preparation in order for round one and I think we’ve gone a fair way down the track as far as that goes.

“I still think we’ve got a bit of improvement in how we want to play, but there were some very positive things in there for us.

“I think we’ll get better, that’s the exciting part of it, but we need to get that balance right.

“We came up with a couple errors, turnovers on play one, that’s going to really hurt us in premiership games, but if we get that balance right we’ll be in with a shout.”

The return of Burt and captain Nathan Cayless will warm the heart of Eels supporters, with both playing strong games.

A Burt 40-20 in the opening minute of play gave the Eels field position and they soon capitalised, Eric Grothe getting on the end of a Jarryd Hayne break to score in the corner.

Showing no ill effects from the knee reconstruction that cruelled his 2007 campaign Burt converted from the sideline to make it 6-nil to the Eels after as many minutes.

After a sustained period of Roosters attack, during which wing Joel Reddy bundled opposite number Amos Roberts into touch on no less than three occasions, the Eels went in again for a 10-nil lead.

Working the short side Grothe neatly put Hayne away for the try in the 22nd minute of the half.

The Eels next was pure class, Feleti Mateo making the most of the tiring Roosters defence to break the line before firing a pinpoint pass to Brett Finch, who in turn found the waiting arms of Josh Cordoba who scored next to the posts.

Burt’s second conversion of the night made it 16-nil to the Eels approaching half time.

The Roosters policy of targeting the right wing paid off just before the break, Roberts on the end of a bullet like pass from Braith Anasta to score out wide for Craig Fitzgibbon to convert for a 16-6 half time scoreline.

Weller Hauraki scored to extend the Eels lead to 22-6 eight minutes into the second half, the second rower juggling the ball before shrugging off the tackler to score.

Burt was again on song with the conversion as the Eels lead began to look comfortable.

A blockbusting run from Matt Keating laid on their Eels fifth try midway through the half, Burt capping a big comeback game by sprinting 30 metres to score under the posts.

The Roosters hit back almost immediately, Anthony Minichiello steaming onto a short ball to score, Roberts nailing the conversion to make it 28-12 with 13 minutes remaining.

Another Roosters four pointer scored and converted by Roberts made the match interesting at 28-18 with 11 minutes left to play, however the win was put beyond doubt five minutes from time when Mark Riddell scored for the Eels from Dummy half, the conversion taking the final score along to 34-18 in favour of Parramatta.

Great to here, the side seemed to gel, Burty and Caylo made encouraging comebacks. And even better we seemed to have come through the game unscathed :D

Great to see Luke Burt back, looks to have lost nothing from his injury layoff hitting his first shot from out wide with ease, a 40/20, backing up a nice break from Matt Keating to score and a short kick off and regather welcome back Luke. :D
Some promising signs with the backline looking slick for the most part, and great goal line defense when the Roosters had about 5 sets camped inside the 10 metre line and couldn't get over.

It still amazes me that he can keep pulling those off... surely opposition teams know he is one of the best in the business???

I agree and he always times it right, yet to notice burt stuff one up its like he always has one eye on each oppostion player and in a twinkling of an eye he notices the oppostion turn there head or nodd off or something and the little kick and regather is on.

I would like to see how our defence would aim up if Burt was to stuff one up.

Agree. I though Luke was great. Back to his best from last year.

Yes we defended our line for 5/6 sets and the Rorters had nothing. It was a bit of a penalty-a-thon with the ref pinging the teams for stupid little penalties. Very frustrating for the players and fans.

Has anyone said in this thread that they trialed the two refs - one behind each team ? Was very confusing at times - even for the refs.

Other than Luke I thought that Caylo & Fui were good. Caylo's hands were a little sloppy with 2/3 knock-ons but otherwise he ran hard. Finchy was good, always tidy at the back and saved many half breaks.

Mateo played that sort of lock slash 5/8 game that he does so well. My only criticism was that Inu & Hayne could have done with more ball.

Special mention to Piggy. He played the whole first half and the first 20 of the second. I do fear that he may have lost some impact with his loss of weight, but he made up for that with his involvement in the game.

Just on the NYC: Very impressed with Mortimer, Keating K, the Mannah boys and Tautai who showed a good amount of mongrel.

Defence was the highlight of the night. They scored about 5% of the sets they had in our 20. Good scrambling defence.

I'm pretty sure the match report was wrong in relation to the artist formally known as piggy's try. I recall that being the try where he was passed the ball right near the line, lost it over his shoulder, spun around and caught the ball as he was falling over the tryline

What was the game last year when parra knocked on from the kickoff and we had a goal line drop out and burt did a short kick and regathered. a masterstroke.

he sure beats Michael Witt's and Brad Drew's attempts at goal line dropouts.

That was that magical game against the Tigers at ANZ stadium on a Monday night. Nathan Cayless was the man who knocked it on.
