This happens at every second training session and goes unreported.

How many times have you heard of someone sitting out a game for a training head knock? Its almost unheard of.

Before it was entertaining watching the big hits from the 80's/90's on Youtube, now its sad seeing people like Mario Fenech damage themselves.

ok right … any cases then similar to this where the player was subsequently further injured during the game ?

I’m not trying to excuse what went on in this game .. it’s a terrible look and they clearly need to be better … but I’m not sure this is happening on a regular basis pre game or training

lol yeh sure
There is definitely a level of BS / covering up happening here. Whilst not all the coaching staff and medical staff come out for the pre-match warm up, there is usually someone (if not multiple) people out there coordinating it.

Clearly someone must have been out there and noticed something, otherwise how else would the two members of the Tongan medical staff know to go out there and assess him?

If no one had any idea, the medical staff wouldn't have been called out.

Yeah, but it was also reported that if he didn't get KO'd and went for that scan they never would've found that existing cyst. Lomax's high shot probably saved his life.

Anyway, what does everyone expect from a bunch of amateurs like the Tongan staff? Absolute imbeciles all of them, including their coach. They sent an already concussed player out against arguably the most imposing forward pack ever assembled, with zero chance of making the final. What did they expect was going to happen to him?

Get well son Eli.
You are right, God knows whay would have happened if he didn't get the scans.

You forgot the add the final bit of ridiculous irony to the saga- they had Leka freaking Halasima available at 18th man and chose not to use him.

I remember when my brother got hit by a car while he was driving his bike, he picked up the bike and walked home his face was a mess, the bike totally mangled, all he kept saying is that I’ve to go to work tomorrow, buddy I said you ain’t going nowhere, I took him to the hospital at Sutherland and there he stayed for one week, the irony was the bitch that hit my brother knocked on our door wanting him to pay compensation for damages to her vehicle, told her to go f**k herself. yeah concussion is a serious problem.

"In the past 12 months, 22% of men and seven per cent of women reported having experienced a suspected concussion at training"

"more than a third of NRL players continue to train after suffering concussions"

I hope he sues for millions

I used to complain about shoulder charges being banned and bring back the biff this has made me change a bit. I like the collision part of that game

Back in the old days they would literally pole drive guys into the turf and do stuff that would result in assault charges

Shame cause the nrl has good concussion protocols but after this they are going to come down like a tonne of bricks as they should

You said what happened to Katoa “happens every second training session”…

I took that to mean the full incident , where it looks like you were making a different point about the player being allowed to continue after a cooncussion…Katoa had multiple head knocks in a short period of time ..which I would imagine is rare these days … thankfully, as we see the consequences…

Again , I’ll strongly agree that the Clubs need to be better about this process and if a player is concussed at training then they need to be assessed and sat for the same period they are if it happens during a game …hopefully this is a major wake up call and Katoa makes a full recovery

Those doctors and the coaching / training team are going to blame each other. Pretty sure I saw a trainer from Tonga with Katoa after Hop the flop decided a warm up was the wwe and Katoa was Keith Galloway. I'd say those doctors will never be used and we'll see a statement sometime next year saying Woolf will step down from rep coaching to focus on the Dolphins

I agree with what you are saying.

My point was that players are reagularily knocked out at training and do continue on, also players on an 11 day stand down participate in contact sessions while awaiting to play again. Its one thing to regulate the on field stuff, which is a step in the right direction but there is a whole other side which is out of sight out of mind.

I think that we all want a tough game that doesn't leave the most passionate players disabled at the end of their career.

Kristian Woolf is on the record saying an HIA was performed on Katoa -

I think he's saying there that two were performed in the game, not in the warm-ups

What was Hopoate doing using the shoulder in warm up
I don't like the angle of people trying to blame Hopoate or suggest he should have told medical staff. Looks like a high ball, Lehi gets his timing slightly wrong and collects him. It happens.

In that nrlphysio footage, there is a medical person with Katoa. How the hell can they then claim they wouldn't have let him play if they saw footage? Lots of people would have seen how bad the contact was, his eye is bloodied and he's groggy as hell, why would you need to rely on footage that isn't guaranteed to be there?

Kristian Woolf has let himself down significantly by saying he backs the doctors and everything was done by the book. So clearly untrue, or at least unconfirmed

Don't think you've put much thought into this statement.
Is LU's resident crack head back on the nose beers ?

Suallii missed a semi final because he told staff he'd been concussed during training.

You think it's unreasonable to suggest Katoa, Hopoate or any other player that saw the incident could have told the medical staff he was knocked out?

Plenty. Storm had at least 2 this year who missed games, not including Warbrick who copped one in a preseason game and another a couple of weeks later at training and missed like 10 or 12 games with ongoing issues. I also recall hearing of two or three from other clubs as well and being surprised that it was now a thing.
