It will be interesting to see what the NRL's 'investigation ' uncovers.

If they admit that protocols weren't adhered to they will be leaving themselves wiiiiiiiiiide open for litigation

Is LU's resident crack head back on the nose beers ?

Suallii missed a semi final because he told staff he'd been concussed during training.

You think it's unreasonable to suggest Katoa, Hopoate or any other player that saw the incident could have told the medical staff he was knocked out?
Yes, it's completely unreasonable to suggest the onus is on a player, who was just knocked senseless, to make such a call.

This is the sort of incident that will see clubs discourage players from representing the 2nd tier nations or International footy in general

Recovery to take months

Hope he makes a full return to the nrl

Weird how no blame is going to hoppa. Who does that to a team mate right before a game

The onus shouldn't be on the player but the quotes from the smh say the medical staff didn't see what happened and when they asked the players what had happened none of them said Katoa had been hit in the head.

I hope all of the medical staff involved never work on an NRL game again, and I also hope that little b#tch Hopoate is having sleepless nights. If the coward had answered the trainers questions truthfully none of this would have happened

What? Geezus man. Did you get a head injury, too? It was an accidental contact on a high kick before the game. It's not Chinese checkers.

Also would like a Cat 1 check on this poster. Absolute rubbish

That happens in a game and he’s in the bin and copping a long suspension

Dunno which footage you watched but his head goes up for the collision

Well yeah I can agree with your first sentence, of course he does. I could say it was probably reckless but it was an accident. I watched it again (nrlphysio video) and Lehi runs in to potentially make a go at challenging, doesn't get there, and then almost on muscle memory braces for impact as Katoa is coming through.

Of course, he'd be out for six weeks if it was in-game. But it was a clumsy mistake, unless anyone thinks Lehi is out to crock the best player Tonga has

It was a total accident, no blame should be given.

I don't think the NRL are leaving themselves open because it wasn't an NRL event, nor an ARL one.

Good chance it’s career over. This stupidity is risking the future of the game. Kneejerk reactions and big compensation to be the fallout

Not necessarily. The NRL doesn't control/run international rugby league outside of the Australian Test team. I'd suggest its under the auspices of the IRL.
The Tonga v Samoa Pacific Cup game at Suncorp was 100% an NRL event. I work at Suncorp and all of the media and staff accreditation has the NRL logo all over it.

Id be surprised that it would be different just because this particular game was played in NZ

Surely that’s not the case, do the doctors not think that concussions outside of a game count towards a concussion, or is it more cynical - he can’t fail a test that he doesn’t take

If not for the coverage showing the pre-game warm up hit, I doubt it would have been a point of contention.

That being said, I agree with your POV that duty of care applies as a whole and not just for the 80 minutes of game time.

It looked awful on replay, moments before kick off and it should hve been dealt with there and then.

Taking a significant hit to the head shouldnt be weighted differently at any level of the game. I retired from club football due to head injury concerns and I wasn’t anywhere near the NRL or International level. All it took was symptoms, a doctor and common sense to walk away.

1000% and I fully support your decision.

I meant, if clubs can't trust that their players will be looked after professionally, particularly by the 2nd tier nations, they will discourage players involvement.
