Empire's Top 50 Indie Films

From the site:

'Big budgets, big names and a wide release are but three of the advantages enjoyed by studio films. An overriding concern to make money, interfering executives and lack of creative control are three more, rather less enjoyable, attributes. Because of this it's more often independent cinema you must turn to for examples of truly brave and innovative filmmaking and, assembled herein, you will find Empire's choice of the 50 greatest independent films: some of the boldest and most creative movies ever undertaken. Bearing in mind that to encompass all those that are independently financed would mean The Phantom Menace is an independent film, we've qualified all entries by ensuring they were made with what we consider to be an independent spirit. The final order then takes into account the quality of the film, the circumstances behind its production, the achievement of the filmmakers despite monetary and logistical constraints and its influence on subsequent projects'

IMO, Eraserhead is the quintesential indie film. It was writen and directed by David Lynch, and he also funded the entire project over a 7 year period as there were no financial backers for a film so unusual, and as a result, he created one of the most groundbreaking and brilliant films of all time.

Points of Debate:

* Blair Witch in front of Being John Malkovich? Ha!
* Sideways so high - it was good but there are better films...
* Clerks only being at 4...

I think Blair Witch is under-rated by many. I think it's a great example of a simple premise working very well.

Donnie Darko is one of my favourite films so I'm happy to see it so high.

Sideways is over-rated. It has some stunningly written and performed scenes and it is often very funny, but I just don't think it is top 10 worthy overall.

Why no Eternal Sunshine? I take it it's not "indie".

Eternal Sunshine was done by one of the major film companies on a pretty fair budget with 2 pretty major lead actors - probably fair enough it isn't there (even though that the first thing i thought when i read the chart...)

Clerks should be number one. What was acheived on a shoe string budget was just phenomenal.

Clerks was brilliant but I have enough issues that its rated ahead of life of brian, I couldn't hack it any higher :p

Memento probably should have been higher just for being one of the few movies over the last few years to actually try something different but I guess 13 isn't something you can complain about either.

Cube should be nowhere near that list. It's sh*t.

El Mariachi should be higher. Great movie.

I'm happy for Donnie Darko to be up there too, good film, well made.

And very happy to see The Usual Suspects there - brilliant film.

Army of Darkness should perhaps be in there somewhere?

Because people like Drew Barrymore accepted award rates or some such to ensure the film could be made.

She also executive produced it.
