ENG v FRA Test Confirmed (Avignon 22 October) + 2017 Test Rumours

England will play France as a warm up for the Four Nations in Avignon.

Wayne Bennett’s first game in charge of England Rugby League will be against France in Avignon at the Parc des Sports on Saturday October 22 (6.30pm CET).

This will be England’s only game ahead of this year’s Four Nations where they will meet New Zealand a week later at The John Smith’s Stadium.

Announced as head coach in February, Bennett will take the squad over to Avignon for the first time since 2011 when England defeated France 32-18 and newly appointed Team Manager Jamie Peacock was captain.

Bennett believes the French will be a different side on home soil: “I can imagine that they were disappointed with how things went when we met them last year. When you play a side at their stadium and in front of their fans, then things can change.

“There’s a lot of pride on the line and an added pressure of doing your best for your country.

“This is my first opportunity to see the squad in action and I feel an away game is good preparation to see how everyone comes together in a new environment.

“The Four Nations is getting closer and I’m happy with how England’s plans are going so far.”

Also, Nigel Wood has said in an interview with League Weekly that England may play a mid-season test in Southern Hemisphere in 2017.

The Rugby Football League are hoping to line up southern hemisphere opposition for Wayne Bennett’s side as they look to give them the best possible preparation for the 2017 World Cup.

A mid-year Test match against New Zealand – possibly in the Middle East – had previously been mooted.

But RFL chief executive Nigel Wood said the “most likely outcome” was now for England and to have a fixture on Sunday, May 7 as part of the NRL’s representative weekend, which is headlined by the Anzac Test.

It is understood that the most likely opponents for such a game is one of the Pacific Island nations.

Papua New Guinea look an obvious option, with Fiji, Tonga, Samoa and the Cook Islands offering alternatives.

Should no suitable opponent be found, the England team is likely to play a home game against France instead.

Either way, RFL chief Wood said: “I think we’ll be having a mid-season international next year, which is one of the issues on (Wayne Bennett’s) wishlist.

“We’re just working out who that will be against and where that will take place.

“It will be wherever it needs to be. The overwhelming consideration is the quality of the opposition.

“There are two alternatives in play; one involves southern hemisphere opposition where we go down there and one involves where we wouldn’t.

“The most likely outcome is that a match will be played on or around the NRL’s representative weekend – May 7.

“I wouldn’t rule out Dubai. Singapore or Hong Kong, but fundamentally it’s either England or Australia.

“The other bits and pieces of how we keep England together in World Cup year are all being worked through very positively and collaboratively.”

Those “bits and pieces” include a two-week warm weather training camp in January.

Good to see, hopefully France give them a good contest.

Is this France's only game for the rest of this year?

Probably? There's isn't any European Cup thing is there at the same time as the Four Nations? Would like to think France, Ireland and Wales would have something organised.

Ireland and Wales (and all the European countries they wouldn't put 100 on) have WC Qualifiers.
England and Scotland have 4N.

Take a look at the other thread I posted. Tonga and PNG (and to a lesser extent Samoa and Fiji) are all under represnted in this years calendar. They'd be smart to organise some high quality tests against these teams in preparation for next year.

Saw rumours elsewhere from guys normally in the know with all things France that they new FFRXIII board is trying to get a Pacific nation to tour.

Also just looked at that stat, last time England played France in France the score was 32-18?.. typical Rugby League that they'd wait 5 years to repeat that fixture

England beat France by about 80 last year if I recall. But not in France

Exactly, haven't played in France since 2011, 5 years. That 80ish thrashing was very much the exception to the rule, spelled out major problems in the French national set up that now looked to be being addressed under a new board.

Said this earlier before the FFR13 elections that the best way for France to move forward/progress would be to get away from playing the likes of Scotland, Wales and Ireland and setup their own series against the PI nations. A three test match series against Papua New Guinea in France or vice verse would be fantastic.

Yeah I think they are looking to get a game or two against PNG later in the year.

Avignon seems like a great little hotbed for the sport in France, good to see they are continuing to build on it.

Baffles the mind why no more effort was put into France after the promising results of that match both on the field and off commercially. Also the Game they took to Lens against Wales seemed to be big media effort with a good result but yet nothing.

Still think they should of hosted all European Cup matches these past years and that way Bein Sport could of got behind a permanent schedule.
