:sarcasm::lol:ENGLAND have made a bold bid to steal Manly half Daly Cherry-Evans, offering him a walk-up start to play in this year's Four Nations. In a move that is sure to test the rookie's loyalties, England coach Steve McNamara called Daly Cherry-Evans last week in a bid to entice him to play for the Poms. Cherry-Evans is eligible to play for England because his mother's family hails from the UK.
"We received a call from the English coach during the week," Cherry-Evans' manager Gavin Orr said.
"A few people over there know that he has English heritage and there is quite a bit of interest in him.
"I think there would be a spot for him in the England team if he wanted it."
A park footballer just 12 months ago, his meteoric rise continued this week when Tim Sheens declared he was also in the sights of the Kangaroos.
With England hovering, Sheens' "interest" could be enough to ward off the threat from England.
"His first choice is to play with Queensland and Australia," Orr said.
"And it looks as though there is every chance that may happen in the future. I don't think you will see him playing for England."
Sheens said Cherry-Evans was being considered as a bolter for the Kangaroos.
"I thought the young kid was outstanding last week," Sheens said. "Of all the halfbacks, he's got the last chance to impress on Sunday. Grand finals always throw up a smoky for the Kangaroos."
His heritage could be bad news for the Sea Eagles who are negotiating to upgrade and extend his contract.
Several English clubs are aware he will not cost them a prized quota spot and have made him a target.
"We tried to get him a couple of years ago," said one English coach. "And the interest in him has only gone up. There are no halfbacks around at the moment and he is certainly right up the top of the list."
He could become one of the few players to win a premiership in his debut year against the Warriors today, yet Cherry-Evans has refused to rule out leaving the Sea Eagles nest.
