Enough about USA lets talk Canada!

So what is the Canadian position on imported players?

I don't know the visa situation, but I get the feeling that Australians can get a work visa for Canada much easier than for the US.

The US teams seem to have a limit of 3 imports, and that seems to work well for them, but I think the Canadians could fast track their development if they went to 5 per team for a few years, assuming they could find 5 good players looking for a working holiday.

If the Canadian season and the US season were different, even a few of the more experienced US guys could play as imports in Canada if they wanted to.
I don't know what the official position is but if someone were to tell me there is no official position, I wouldn't be surprised. I think the US teams import quota is more of a "competitive balance" rule. Obviously if there is a team full of Australian players they will run roughshod over all the other teams.
In Canada though, I'd say the stance is - if you can help us grow the game, you can hail from the moon and it wouldn't matter. But, people being people, that stance would change if there became a "competitive imbalance".

Our International schedule should be interesting if everybody that has indicated they will come does. Again, you'll have to wait for an official announcement from CRL. We are hping to do some kind of tour to the UK/Europe prior or during the 2013 World Cup and we also intend on having a Canada University team at the 2013 University World Cup... does anybody have any contact people for that???

Hey Judah, I'm involved with the NSW Tertiary Student Rugby League and a number of the officials involved in our club were involved in the 08 University World Cup and are involved with the AURL side. Let me ask a few questions and I'll shot you across some details.

This is a good read on the player salaries and salary cap for CFL.
Although it is wikipedia, it is referenced so it should be fairly accurate.
It is much the same as the NRL, except the CFL have 40-42 players, compared to NRL's 25.
Minimum wage of $42 000, with a salary cap of about $4.5 million.
Hopefully, one day, the CRL will get to say a championship 1 level, in regards to salaries (of course a long way down the track), and that should coincide with media coverage, sponsors, and govt grants.
I wouldn't think it would be an impossible scenario for that to be achieve in 10-20 years time.
Meanwhile, the CRL has done an incredible amount in their 2 years of activity. And if they think they can work alongside rugby union, good on them. Players can still play both sports, and i think there will be more players interested if a CRL player who plays union on the saturday tells his team mates about the game the next day on a sunday. Expansion could definitely happen in 2013.
I wouldn't go higher than 6 teams in each conference, maybe 8 tops if it can be sustained. But 6 in each conference, with the winner of each playing the other at the conclusion of the season would be un real.
Would generate a bit of attention too.
If you go on the North Vancouver or maybe the South Surrey RL team facebook page, they have put up a pic of a newspaper article reporting on their first game. That's a good start.

Vaguely - I know it's very similar to NFL, but if you asked me to name 5 teams in that league I'd seriously struggle!

The money in NFL is huge - so if they're similar games, wouldn't the best CFL athletes be head-hunted by the NFL anyway?

Also, there's always the chance that the NFL may expand into Canada - case in point, speculation that the Buffalo Bills may move to Toronto.
That would be a blow to the CFL.

Rugby League gives Canada an alternative that's similar in some ways to CFL/NFL (tackle count with kick at the end or hand-over), and different in others (non-stop play, tons of "lateral" passing).
Yeah the money in the NFL is Huge the cap is $120 million compared to $4.35 million in the CFL and players do try to make the jump to the NFL but most get cut
http://thegoodpoint.com/2011/08/the-cfl-nfl-transition/
some do make it though http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/trainingcamp08/news/story?id=3535396
As for the Bills moving to Toronto, never going to happen the NFL is a TV driven league and a Toronto franchise will not bring one more dollar from the American networks

The NFL will never expand into Canada because as supercharger stated, one they'd get no extra money from the USA TV networks, and secondly the Canadian TV networks just simply don't offer the same amount of money for sport.

If you look at the CFL history during the early-mid 90's you'll see there was an expansion by the CFL into the US in an attempt to increase the CFL's revenues (ie. getting a strong US TV deal). The TV deal never eventuated and the only USA based team that did any well was the Baltimore Stallions who got decent crowds and won the 95 Grey Cup.

Other teams like Las Vegas averaged under 3,000 in their seasons.

In terms of the stance of imported players, I guess none of the clubs in Canada are established enough to have the networks or job opportunities to 'import' players like some of the US clubs can do (ie. offer work on the side of a base pay), but if anyone who is visiting or living in Canada wants to play league, of course there would be no stopping them.

Bringing in rules regarding imports and distributing talent is still years away for the CRL.

Most of the players that go from the CFL to the NFL are Americans who for a variety of reasons didn't make the cut or chose the CFL because they weren't drafted. Some, after they have gained experience return to the NFL on tryouts, some make it, some don't. There have been very few Canadians that have ever played in the NFL. Anthony Fantusz, one of the players in the article linked above, is Canadian. He tried out for the Chicago Bears this season, was a late cut and returned to the CFL. That is usually the scenario for Canadian players.

and what are you hearing?

They have big plans for BC. Will be great to have the CFL in Toronto and BC competition pushing rugby league from all angels in Canada. There are a number of suggestions of what nations Canada might play internationals against next year and it's hard to separate the rumours from the truth but there seems to be a lot for talk of the CFL paying for Russia to come out and play.

Some other stuff has already been touched on in this thread. I am hearing that the BC competition may have 5 clubs in it's first year.

That is right Yakstorm, none of our clubs have enough resources to offer jobs or help with accommodation for overseas players. Nor would it be encouraged as we are all about developing Canadian players and that includes Canadian eligible players. We are not opposed to overseas players coming over for a run, but this certainly isn't a priority. I think there are enough people with rugby league experience travelling to Canada on their own merits or immigrating here too.

I think we would be more interested in having quality coaches coming over for longer periods of time to help develop our players. We had Kieron Purtill over for the 2010 Atlantic Cup so it was great gaining from his experience, but he only had a week in Canada before the tournament so this was not long enough to make huge improvements.

We also would rather sending our players over to clubs overseas to test themselves and gain from the experience. We have a lot of good young players coming through that would benefit from the opportunity to practice/play in a professional set up. We even had one 17 year old make his Canada début this year. It would be great to send him over to an ESL or NRL U20 for a training camp in the next couple of years.

There is an interview that provides a good overview of Canada Rugby League on the global rugby league website. I can't attach the link as i don't have enough posts. Perhaps somebody else can.

Russian RL website seems to be suggesting a game against the Wolverines in 2012. I like the fact that Canada is keen to play internationals as a way of promoting the sport, and also that they want to play as many different nations as possible.
