Eric Grothe is giving up swearing for Schizophrenia research and is urging others to join him in his role as SwearStop Ambassador.
SwearStop is the fun online campaign to give up bad language for a week from 17 May. The Schizophrenia Research Institute is calling for 200 volunteers to join Eric to help raise much needed funds.
“I’m taking part in SwearStop to raise money for the third greatest disabler in young people, Schizophrenia,” Eric said.
“One in one hundred young Australians will be diagnosed this year and 30 per cent of those will attempt suicide.”
“There is no cure and the Schizophrenia Research Institute need funds to find out the causes and find a cure.”
Other SwearStop ambassadors include Channel Nine commentator Ray Warren, Triple M’s Mark Geyer, NRL stars Ben Ross and Nate Myles, Miss World Australia Sophie Lavers, Glen Wheeler and celebrity chef Ben O’Donoghue.
Anyone can get behind this campaign by nominating themselves or a friend to take part in the campaign from 17-23 May 2010 as part of Schizophrenia Awareness Week.
To get involved in SwearStop register online at www.swearstop.com.au then email your friends, colleagues and family to sponsor you for the week.
“Everyone is guilty of the occasional slip of the tongue so why not put you or your friend to the challenge of not swearing for an entire week,” said Helen Connealy, Partnerships Director, from the Schizophrenia Research Institute.
Schizophrenia is a lonely disease but sufferers are often plagued by voices that are constant and contain offensive language.
“By giving up swearing, you will be helping to quieten these voices and give sufferers the hope of silence – a luxury they have to live without,” said Ms Connealy.
Schizophrenia costs the Australian community over $2 billion per annum in both direct health costs and loss of productivity.
Schizophrenia – The Facts:
• Schizophrenia is the third leading cause of disability in young people;
• 30 percent attempt suicide, five percent die;
• Schizophrenia can arise in any family;
• One in every 100 young people will develop schizophrenia; and
• There is no cure and current treatments are not enough.
