ESL 9s

I was wondering today whether they were thinking of having the ESL premiers invited every year, though that would mean playing the WCC regularly down here rather than once every 20years or so...
May need to be both GF'ists, or GF winner plus 'first past the post' team.
Or not at all.

Agreed.

Have a quota of invitational team.

Let the NRL choose who they want to invite based on strategy.

I.e. If Fiji is playing in the four nations, invite them to build support.

Or if the NRL is investing x amount in say PNG, invite them

16 teams is the perfect number for 9's. If you extend the number of teams you could maybe make it a 3 day event. Since there will only be 12 ESL teams it makes sense to have 4 invites to make it a 16 team event.

the championship 9's - 16 teams, 12 champ teams + 4 invites (champ1 winners,3 french teams?) held in june (blackpool)

ESL 9's- 16 teams , 12 ESL teams + 4 invites ( 2 champ 9's finalists + 2 more) held in july at the man city

dave smith has already spoke about expanding it...

super league has already started though which is why its not really doable to invite our club sides...

how about GB gets invited instead of england? means ESLclubs only lose 17-18 players instead of 50+ if all 4 home nations get invited...

Yes

No way in hell should that happen.

Why not? The world sevens were an extremely successful tool in growing the sport internationally. There is nothing wrong with having international teams pooled with nrl teams.

Maybe Super League Teams, but pretty much every international team draws players from the NRL, so the international teams would be either native or second string.

The 9s is trying to be an elite competition, not a participation booster like 7s. Having token overseas teams just to include more countries devalues the competition.

There is no reason it can't be both.

GB?

If there are international teams they will surely be limited to the Pacific and European theatres respectively. Globe-trotting for nines is a good way to waste money.
