The first half was fantastic, i thought Briscoe and Horne were great for Hull and Gilmour dangerous for Saints.

The 2nd half wasn't as good as once again St's had more impact off he bench.
Domic and Tony were very dodgy out wide and G.Horne made a couple of costly errors.
James Graham = excellent.

TRY ST HELENS!

Leon PRYCE the scorer!

St Helens - 8 ktc (Meli, Pryce Tries, Lyon 0/1)

Hull FC - 4 (Domic Try, Cooke 0/1)

I don't think this was a try at all. Pryce dived and slid into the ingoal, which was incredibly narrow... and the ball didn't make contact with the ground until it was over the dead ball line.

The incredible thing is the commentators missed it time and time again... and it seemed like they tried to avoid showing the fact that it wasn't a try at all.

No it was ok, there were two lines in the ingoal area one was the soccer goal line, the actual dead in goal line was 3 yards further back and Pryce grounded well before that.

My take on the game... first half was a great battle. Hull succeeded in dictating the style of the game to St Helens, and for the most part shutting their attacking prowess down. St Helens talent shines through in the way they play out each minute of the game, and make the most of chances when they arrive. The play with two minutes before half-time was a coach killer for Hull, and sure enough St Helens swooped to take in a fortunate 6 point advantage and momentum.

Hull really needed to shap up and come out just as strong and committed and mistake free in the second half, but they didn't. An early Hull mistake and St Helens scored what was the vital try. Sean Long's attacking kicks were very good last night, and exploited the positioning difficulties of Hull's wingers. Hull's kicking game was much stronger for most of the first half than it was for the rest of the match too.

St Helens bench talent really gives them advantage when other teams are tiring or clocking off. Graham (great tackler around the legs), Roby, and Fa'asalavu are great players to have up your sleeve, fair to say that Hull don't have that same impact in reserve.

Thought Wellens was a strange choice as medal winner, felt that Long was more instrumental in their win on this occasion (though didn't think he was most deserving of the Cup medal at the time). The world works in strange ways I guess.

Great crowd, great atmosphere as always, there's nothing like it. And having now been to 18 grand finals as a neutral (not counting my 5 cheering on my own Parramatta) in various Sydney venues and over here, the buzz in and around old Trafford before and throughout a Superleague grand final is second to none I've experienced in rugby league.

Congrats to St Helens, best side all year and deserved winners of the double.

Nice job on the updates too Scube.

In terms of the refereeing, I thought it was a bit ordinary. Kirkpatrick seemed determined not to stamp his authority over creeping offside for either side preferring to aim for one of those "penalty free" matches that refs sometimes want to have regardless of the actual game circumstances.

No dramas for mine on the obstruction ruling, and most of the Hull fans at the ground weren't whinging, they were cursing the stupidity of doing that on the first tackle. Thought there was something fishy about one of the second half Saints tries that came from the six-to-go and play on an attempted chargedown, your runners can't be that far in front of the kicker ("downtown" as we used to call it) and then be allowed to play on like that, surely? But rule interpretations aside the game was pretty much all done by that stage and Saints on a roll.

Kirk Yeaman did a good job of keeping Jamie Lyon quiet in attack for most of the game. Great addition to the covering tackle on Raynor early by Lyon, which was probably the difference making him take the cornerpost instead of scoring for Hull.

Thought Gaz and Motu Tony were a bit of a worry at times in defence, Domic not much better. Shayne McMenemy seems to be part of the "thinking" attacking plays out wide on the right. Horne (Richard) throws a good long pass when on the run in attack.

Thought Jason Hooper was going to be a weak link as he seemed injured and struggling early. But he kept with his game, and did the bulk of the pressure on Hull's kickers that saw their kicking game deteriorate after around 25 minutes or so. Saints pack and bench just get the job done for the whole 80 mins, no fuss.
