Engage Super League XII has been the best supported season in the history of the competition - attracting an average weekly attendance of over 10,000 per game for the first time ever.

The average attendance at the completion of the 27 round regular season is 10,264 per game per week (last season's average at the end of the season was 9,026 per game per week).

An aggregate total of 1,662,800 supporters have passed through the gates at engage Super League stadia.
That figure exceeds the 1,516,342 who turned out during the 28 round regular season in 2006.

Last year's figures represented an all time high for Super League (which began in 1996) and that record has been broken again by this current campaign.

The continued growth of engage Super League's average attendance has been fuelled by the growth of attendances within many individual club marketplaces.

Bradford Bulls, Huddersfield Giants, Wakefield Wildcats and Warrington Wolves have shown a year on year increase in their average attendances.

In fact Huddersfield Giants have averaged over 7,000 for the first time since the 1957/58 season. Wakefield Trinity Wildcats have recorded their best average attendances in the Super League era and have seen their average crowd increase by 90 per cent over the last four years.

Leeds Rhinos, Catalans Dragons, Salford City Reds, Hull FC and Wigan Warriors have also shown year on year increases in their average attendances.

In addition, Hull Kingston Rovers have attracted an average gate for their engage Super League debut which is an 111 per cent increase on their 2006 average weekly gate.

Following Friday night's attendance of 19,776 for the game against Wakefield at Headingley Carnegie Stadium, Leeds Rhinos posted their highest average attendance since the Second World War.

The Rhinos final average is 17,558 per game which means they have regained their crown as the UK's best supported rugby club of either code.

Also Wigan Warriors have broken a 19 year old attendance record after attracting a crowd of 22,031 for Friday night's game against St Helens.

Commenting on the crowd boom, the RFL's Chief Operating Officer Nigel Wood said, "This record breaking season shows that engage Super League continues to grow and develop at a very healthy rate.

"The League's consistent ability to break attendance records is proof of it's unique appeal as a family sporting experience and we are delighted to confirm these all time high crowd figures."

Wood added: "Congratulations must go to those clubs who have worked to maintain a growth in their audiences and the overall effect means that engage Super League maintains its integral place in the British sporting summer.

"We believe the growth in attendances has also been driven by the most competitive and unpredictable season ever and we expect even more excitement and spectacle as the play-offs get underway."

Other facts about engage Super League's record breaking growth...

* A new record for the most number of supporters to attend a single round of fixtures has been set twice this season - round 25 drew a total of 78,917 supporters beating round nine which attracted 76,665 fans (previously the best attended round came in the 2005 season and drew 69,830 supporters).
* This season’s engage Super League competition has generated the highest weekly average attendance for an elite League since the introduction of multiple divisions to the sport in 1973.
* A new Super League weekly average attendance record has set been every season since 2001.
* The competition has attracted an aggregate of over one and a half million supporters in the space of one campaign for the second successive season.

Strangely the ESL's dominant force showed a drop in their average gate. Are the Scousers getting blase about success already?

Good to see it got over the 10,000 mark. The crowdwatch thread's goal achieved!

By process of elimination the only two clubs not mentioned and who therefore did not increase their average this year were Saints and Harlequins.

Good news, but how was the Millenium Magic figure counted? I've got a feeling they may have been dodgy and counted the crowd figure 3 times for one day of play.

Still, good news, nice to see Wakey and Huddersfield increase, it was great to see Hull KR fight and survive this year, and it was great to see Catalans get some success and steady support. Do you have averages for each individual team? Quins might be a worry.

great news! lets hope the increase in crowds leads to an increase in recognition and respect and an increased tv revenue. i dont know what harliquins can do to increase their average, but i think they are an important part of super league. it will be interesting to see what effect the franchise system has on crowds, especially in the lower leagues. i think it will work!

Nottrue at all, when Saints move to their new stadium there should be a healthy increase judging by the trend of clubs moving into new stadiums eg. Hull, Warrington etc.

Is the new stadium confirmed? I didn't think it was.

I hope Quins RU don't give up on the RL team, to be honest i think i'd be tempted to if i were them. They seem to have gone backwards this year in terms of support.

When does the current TV deal expire? If crowds continue to grow it'll definitely give the RFL more bargaining power with sky and other sponsors. Same as individual clubs when negotiating sponsorship deals.

Is there an explanation for St Helens?

Dominating the comp..those figures seem poor. how big is the area they represent? Obviously Leeds have a big population and have the advantage of the soccer team now being 2 divs below the EPL

Two divs below the EPL but winning and attracting gates the Rhinos can only dream of. They are now regularly getting around 25,000 purely because of the winning factor. Last season they were lucky to pull in 16,000.

Yeah I noticed they are doing quite well. They are sadly my team, and when we went down AND got -15... Well I could see the conference division coming or total dissolutino of the club. They've suprised me.

Well with 17.000 I think the Rhinos are doing brilliantly. 20k would be the next target.

Leeds United have an incredible support base all through Yorkshire - being the only recent top flite club in the whole region helps, and it's really an unfair crowd comparison with the Rhinos who operate within 9 miles of their nearest rival top flite team.

Yeah.....But Loads of Us Love them too :p:p:p

Leeds has always been Known as a Rugby League City, it was the Revie Leeds United that shot them into the Big time and they still have a huge Fan base from then onwards. The best thing for the Rhinos though, is they still have so much Growth in them Fan wise, if they actually had the Success of the likes of Saints, its frightening what Crowds they could pull.

True, but I'm surprised how many random people I meet that are passionate Leeds Utd fans. Unfortunately York must be a bit too close by?

Will expansion impact on the growth of rugby league support in England? With the talk of the Wales side coming into the ESL and a second French team and the Barca FC interesting in getting a side playing out of there Minastadia ground will there continue to be growth or will it kill interest?

Personally i believe as long as they can keep the local contests that draw so much interest as well as find a home for these new clubs it could be the best thing to happen to rugby league in Europe in decades.

Only for you people without a soccer team in the football league who like to follow what you believed to be a winning team. Winning at the mo but only in third rate soccer   . You all loved them so much you deserted in droves when they went down.
