One thing I have been pondering is the relationship between Expansion and TV Rights income.
More games itself does not equal more income, larger income for networks due to the games increases the amount they are willing to pay.
1. Perth is a natural given greater TV coverage due to...
- WA population itself.
- Dormant North's demand
- Time zone (both toward East Coast and coverage in Asia potentially)
2. A 2nd NZ may increase TV income due to an additional Kiwi team IN NZ (Sky) but I suspect it won't have much effect on the Australian side. NZ people are also very comfortable watching other NRL sides due to loads of Kiwis and a long history of doing so.
3. PNG. I don't see a positive at all in the shirt term from TV rights, maybe a little in Watchnrl style subs.
4. Adelaide is a possibility imo similar but different to Perth if they can engage two markets (Sydney and Adelaide) This I support the idea of a long term dual city arrangement with Sharks. This means when in Adelaide, Sydney peke watch, and when in Sydney, South Aussies can watch, increasing viewership.
5. Another Brisbane. I see the logic in terms of geography, but will a fifth QLD side bring in more TV dollars?
6. Where else? And are there dollars?
- South Africa? (European RL is probably better positioned)
Japan? Crazy?
Hawaii or even LA?
Big risk but opening up the USA could be where the risk brings great reward.
