Chalk n Cheese the situation with where we'll get our talent from to field 2 new sides .. as opposed to giggleball & where they get theres from

the AFL has no other elite competions to get ready made talent from
currently we have a host of ex pat Aust players capable of playing NRL today playing in England .. we have some great young English players too .. & then theres union ... we can raid those merkins with our clubs cashed up with TV money ... we'll get the talent required easily to field 2 new sides

the AFL on the otherhand has nowhere to go for its
it must dilute its own comp to field extra sides ..... & the standard drops

& this year particularly .. the AFL is of a woeful standard
simply appalling
shocking ............

not to mention that the S15 salary cap is dropping whilst ours will near double. Aside from the 25 Wallabies/All Blacks squads we should be able to cherry pick any decent jnr RU talent we want.

True but it is very intertesting the amount of negative media about expansion that is coming out. 6 months ago the NRL had to expand to match AFL. now there seems to be an increasing amount of reasons not to expand coming from Gallop and through the media.

That's true. I think it's looking more and more likely we won't see any expansion till 2015.

RL has some massive untapped talent pools that with a little money and strategy we could be developing to ensure the future of expansion for decades to come on both sides of the world:
PNG
Fiji
NZ
Wales
France
WA
NT

all could be producing alot more top talent if the investment was there.

also, there are the rugby players in New Zealand that have previously played rugby league, but switched codes due to there being more money and/or opportunities in rugby union over here.

we can entice them back with more NRL clubs and an increased cap.

Also don't forget English, French & South African union players. If the opportunity is there they may take it.

It'd almost be worth it for the boon to the International tournament alone and that in turn fuels itself.

After reading Uates article in RLW I can;t help but think what talent lies in the Pacific Islands waiting to be tapped by a NRL and RLIF with vision

Gallop has been very pro-expansion to me.

But he is the CEO so he has to state both sides of the argument.

I have suggested this before. I think the new NRL sides should be given a two sided salary cap for the first 4 years. Half would be unlimited with the proviso that half the total squad come from players signed come from outside of the NRL competition and Under 20's. This would allow them to open the wallet and attract high profile players and stable players from Union and Super League with little impact on the NRL competition.

Then they would have the other half of the squad that would have to come from the other half of the salary cap and could be signed from the NRL and Under 20's.

This would allow the best of both worlds in attracting some stars from Union and Super League whilst minimizing the impact on the NRL player pool

For instance

The WA Reds could sign (out of a squad of 25) 13 players from outside the NRL for whatever they wanted to pay them for 4 years. Being in Perth
such could enable them to target high profile Springboks, Union Players and Super League players.

After these 13 players they would have whatever half the salary cap is to sign the other 12 players. These players
could be signed from anywhere.

You are wasting your time trying to convince anyone about the value of paying players more to create exclusivity through hard work and perserverance . . . especially eminating from a Melbourne supporter.

If a club was the first to take a promising junior from another code and transform him into a worldbeater at league the powers that be would never concede it deserved any favours

I'm with you POPEYE. Melbourne should be allowed to spend as much on Queensland players that they poach as much as they like. It's better to be an egg in a carton than an egg in a frying pan.....especially if your mother is a redneck

Better yet put a new NRL team in the area's that youth are being poached and nurture the enormous amount of talent that exists.

Heaps of juniors come from QLD Country, NSW Country, Sydney Metro and the Central Coast to the NRL; however, WA will be like the Storm. Players will come from QLD, NSW and NZ for at least 15 years. Can the NRL support two teams relying on other areas for its juniors.

WA Reds will also weaken the strong nurseries of rugby league because they will rely on those areas for their players...

That is based on the assumption that the model will be as poor as the Storm's was in terms of growing grassroots. I have said all along that alongside an NRL team we need significant development funding for jnr RL in WA. Instead of rorting the cap if the Storm had invested their News funding in Jnr RL in Victoria they would have a number of home grown 1st teamers by now. It is only in very recent years they have started to focus on this and already they have an SG ball side and Under 20's full of Victorian talent. With the meagre situation we are in now we have produced current 1st grade NRL players from the WARL jnr's (unlike Melbourne despite their $'s and having an NRL presence) so I think to compare is a bit oranges and apples. Also the NRL club will be directly owned by the WARL, a unique situation for an NRL club but one that will ensure the focus on RL at all levels isn't lost or opportunities wasted. In many ways WA will (hopefully!) have the most cohesive framework for RL from grassroots to NRL all under one governing body.
