Express shopping lanes

Yesterday, I needed to go to Woolworths to buy two items (yeast and sugar).
As I was in a rush, I duly went to the express register lanes. The rules for these lanes are usually that you can purchase 8 to 15 items or less. At this Woolworths, it was 15 items or less.
There were two checkouts in operation. In one checkout line, I simply could not believe what I saw. This couple in their twenties (with no obvious disability, though must be braindead), had a shopping trolley which was close to being full. It would have had around 40+ items in it, and 40 was a conservative guess for this trolley.
I've seen some people push the limits with express lanes, but this was beyond the joke. Can Woolworths staff ask these inconsiderate shoppers to move to another lane? I never see it done by staff, but they damn well should say something.

It annoys me like hell.

I worked retail for almost two years and was generally on express because, well, I was f**king good at my job. If somebody stepped into my lane with too much sh*t, I'd sent them packing. There were occasional exceptions if it were quiet or if the girl pushing the trolley was particularly cute - but they were few and far between.

And I could put a trolley of 30 items through faster than most of my co-workers could put 15 through

I'm with Angry. If something pisses me off while grocery shopping I be as blunt and rude and vocal about it as possible.

like when two people are having a conversation in front of the goods you want to get behind them.

One time I said "I'd hate to be rude and interrupt your conversation but this is a f**king supermarket, if you wanna chat go to a f**king cafe"

And I heard one say "What's up his arse"

To which I replied "More intellect than whats in your head"

then I grabbed my item, farted and left.

And then there was the time when a young woman and her child were shopping and the kid was bawling, so she yelled at him, he kept crying, so she smacked him. So i quite loudly said to mrs unit "There's a logical approach. The child is in some form of pain and this dope believes the best cure is to inflict more pain on the kid. What a dickhead"

This woman looked at me furiously and practically yelled at me "What the f**k would you know about being a parent!" To which I replied "take some ritalin you idiot" She stormed off and complained to some pimply faced scrawny staff member, who approached me and said "Excuse me sir, I've had a complaint about you. Did you abuse this woman?" and I said "No, I gave her some good advice" he said "Well she says you abused her, I'll have to ask you to leave" so I said "Go ahead, ask away"

So he said "Sir, Can you please leave?" and I said "No, because I haven't paid for my groceries yet. Goodbye" and I walked past them both.

funniest sh*t ever. this old couple who heard it all were laughing the whole time as well.

Lol, you'd be fun to be around Madunit.

I take your point though in that these people need to be told.

The thing that pisses me off is those ignorant p**cks that decide to have a conversation whilst their trolleys are blocking up the aisle.

Once I decided I'd had enough of this and moved one of trolleys out of my path, "lady a" looks at me and says "what do you think you are doing?"
"lady b" says "that was a bit rude of you"
My reply was "rude is being inconsiderate to the shoppers around you whilst having a conversation in the middle of an aisle"

Lady a then called me every type of bastard under the sun, in which I asked her if she can be thick obese and ignorant in somebody elses time.

A couple of shoppers waiting behind me cheered and clapped.

No i don't have f**king fly buys ffs...

The express line at my local store is usually packed to the rafters anyways. It's usually alot quicker to just wait in one of the normal lanes...

Mate, the old saying is the customers always right. But, customers vs customer is always legal. There's no way staff would say anything to them (especially teenage check-out chicks). So if I was you, I'd say it so loud that everyone in the express lane can hear it and that they'd be embarrassed and either
(A) Never do that again, or
(B) Go to the trolley checkout immediately. Sure, it might be embarrassing but you gotta make your stance.

I was at an express check out once where the limit was 12 items or less. I had a basket and was unloading it when I heard a guy in the line actually counting out loud "3...4....5....6" each time I put a new item on the counter and when he got to 13, which was my last item, he started whinging and whining about how I was "cheating the system" by having 13 items in a 12 item express lane.
I turned to him and said "Congratulations on being able to count champ now I suggest you go to lane 5 and pick yourself up a life, I believe they're on sale this week"
Im not sure who was more embarrassed, him or his wife but most of the other people in the line got a good giggle out of it.

But you had too many items?

Only the most severely anal of people gives a crap of somebody takes nine items through an 8 items or less. It's only when they're sneaking through an extra 10 or 20+ items that it's a drama. Any employee worth a damn can scan an extra few items without any real addition in time.

Well the line has to be drawn somewhere right?

Either a rule is enforced or the rule should not exist at all.

That is a ridiculous assertion to make. In a situation as trivial as a supermarket, the use of common sense when upholding an item limit is to be expected when someone is 1 or 2 items over. Maybe if the situation was a little more important (ie Age restrictions for drinking/voting) you'd have a valid point, but honestly dude, just relax! Some people suck at counting.
