I hate when people say field goals are a lottery. It takes a lot of work to get that field goal. And a lot to defend against it. You need to be able to punch it forward when defenders are lifting. Taumololo's runs in the last set was a thing of beauty. You have to deal with a loosening up off the rules. You have to be disciplined. You have to fight for every metre, every inch. The kicker has to weigh up so many options. Do I take it on the 40? Is the risk/reward worth the shot. This is usually done with a defender charging at you. Defence is harder. You have more leeway but you still push the limits. Every metre they gain can be the difference between a win or loss. Do you rush the kicker, and if you do will there be cover if they run it. Golden point brings out the pinnacle in defence. That tackle in the corner in tonight's game is as good as any Milford jinking try. Every mistake is amplified in gp as well.
To say golden point is just a lottery is pretty disrespectful. All the things I love about league, the toughness, the drama, the determination and desperation, the drama, players pushing their limits physically and mentally, the discipline, the tactics, it's all there in gp and its all amplified to the max
