Warriors co-owner Sir Owen Glenn says he won't meddle with new coach Matt Elliott despite admitting playing a key role in removing Brian McClennan from the role last year. :(
"We had to sort the problems we had last year, and we had to take a firm hand to that," Glenn said. "We were just on the wrong track for reasons that everyone knows and we had to make the tough decision and replace the coach.
"We have a new culture now as far as training and self discipline is concerned and all of those things count. ‘I think we're coming into this [season] with all the attention to detail that was necessary and Matt has brought that in as coach."
Glenn says he will not interfere with Elliott's planning, or allow others to.
"It is human nature. Owners or old players tend to say ‘we should get rid of him' or ‘put him in there'. But he's in charge, he draws up the game plan and he's the man. We have given him the job and the responsibility so we'll stand back and watch."
Glenn said he would not be following Phoenix franchise co-owner Gareth Morgan in being proactive on tactics and on-field strategy. "They [the coaches] wouldn't take any notice of me anyway," he said.
"Matty has forgotten more about rugby league than I'll ever know about it. But I did have a say in picking him. I like him. I think he's a good bloke and he's brought a team. That's what it's all about, team building, even in coaching.
"Whether we have the right combinations now that we've got everyone fit is another thing and we'll discover that game by game.
"I said to the boys before Christmas: ‘Every game has to be treated like a grand final and we've got to try to win every game.' "

Um, yeah, I like his money for the Club, he is showing worrying signs of wanting toy train set rights for that. The Hakas another thing. I hope he is true to what's said here and keeps his sticky beak out, and lets Matt Elliot have a fair go of doing what he wants.
If he keeps it up a few people might have to try and have a polite word to him.

At least he seems to like cats

I prefer Glenn's style here to Morgan's. Morgan interfered with the game plan, the domain of the coach. As good a job of revitalizing the Phoenix in the past, Herbert's pedestrian style to match horror show recruitment was never going to win the A League, and crowds were slipping dramatically. Kiwis like entertainment. Herbert insisted on route one football and parking the bus in front of goal. Morgan shouldn't have demanded a strategic change mid season, if he felt Herbert couldn't create a strategy worthy of building the Phoenix to A League title aspirants status, then he should have begun the process of axing him. It is clear neither coach was up to it, yet Glenn never meddled in the tactics like Morgan and ultimately the decision to ax Bluey was right

Sir Owen - you threw a paddy when rugby told you you couldn't be a loose unit with your own team - wish Warriors had done the same.

McClennan was appointed before Glenn became an owner, IIRC. It's up to Glenn if he believes that McClennan was the right fit for what he wants the club to be.

The haka thing is....worrying, but he's an owner of the club, of course he has a major say in who the coach is. Besides, McClennan was shithouse, I don't see how anyone could defend him.

It's funny, we all go on about how we need a hard nosed owner/coach/whatever to come in and take the reins, but when it actually happens? Tears. This is his first season where he has had the ability to actually stamp his mark, so how about we see how it plays out before having a cry over him axing a terrible coach?

funny, there I was an hour ago, sitting on the John Deere, feeding a couple of bales out to the girls (cos theres no grass), thinking about how quiet the Warriors forum had been this off season.
No dramas, nobody spitting the dummy......

until now

If someone telling you to FO is "spitting the dummy" then surely you broke first telling the owner to FO?

I actually just needed to say that to get the taste of agreeing with you in the other thread out of my mouth.
