Richie Fa'aoso poised to leave Knights for Melbourne Storm

BRETT KEEBLE

POPULAR Knights prop Richie Fa’aoso is expected to sever ties with the club this week and play out the rest of the season with Melbourne. The Newcastle Herald has been told the hard-running Tongan international will fly to the Victorian capital today for a medical examination and, barring unforeseen circumstances, will finalise a contract – before the June 30 transfer deadline expires at midnight on Saturday – to finish the season with the Storm.

His future beyond this year remains unclear but he has reportedly been in negotiations with Melbourne and Manly for the past week.
Fa’aoso, who was coming off contract at the end of the season, was one of several senior Knights players dropped to the club’s second-tier NSW Cup squad in the past month after coach Wayne Bennett ran out of patience with his under-performing team and tinkered with different combinations.

The Herald has been told 28-year-old Fa’aoso will be released with the Knights’ best wishes. Fa’aoso, who joined the Knights at the start of 2008 after stints at Parramatta, English club Castleford, Penrith and Sydney Roosters, will be stranded on 99 NRL games for Newcastle.

Neither Fa’aoso nor his manager, Matt Desira from Pacific Sports Management, could be contacted for comment last night. The Knights’ policy is to not comment on issues related to player recruitment or retention.

Fa’aoso told the Herald two weeks ago that he was considering offers from two Sydney NRL clubs, Japanese rugby union club Panasonic Wild Knights, and that other NRL clubs had shown interest in signing him.

Throughout his negotiations elsewhere, Fa’aoso has always insisted he wanted to stay at the Knights but they had told him he would not be retained and had permission to test the transfer market.

Fa’aoso told the Herald two weeks ago that he would consider leaving before the June 30 transfer deadline if he could strike the right deal.

‘‘As I’ve said all along, I want to stay with the Knights because Newcastle is my home now, but I have to do what’s best for myself and my family,’’ Fa’aoso told the Herald on June 15.

‘‘I’m just weighing up all my options now and I’ll see what happens from there, but it’s driving me crazy. I just want to get something sorted out as soon as possible because not knowing what my future holds is very frustrating.’’

Former Knights forward Clint Newton made the same career move in 2007 when, after he played his 100th game for the club, he announced he was leaving after a much publicised falling out with then coach Brian Smith.

Newton joined the Storm and went on to play a leading role in their 34-8 grand final victory over Manly that year, though the NRL later stripped Melbourne of that title and their 2009 premiership because of deliberate breaches of the salary cap.

:( It's a shame, he loved the place, just purchased a house family was settled. Good move for him on field though, he'll probably go close to winning a premiership now

Jobber, can you please change the thread title? While it is expected and 99.9% likely to happen, nothing has been confirmed

yeah, this is probably the last disappointment i'll have in regards to retention. is clearly well out of favour with Bennett for whatever reason, but runs harder than most. i would love to know the thinking behind this one... it surely must be related to something off-field. that, or Bennett doesn't like his on-field work ethic. he's not exactly the hardest worker. he had definitely embraced Newcastle as his home... yeah, pretty sad to see him moved on.

all the best, Richie. you've been my second favourite forward here for quite a long while now (behind Zeb). you'll be missed by many.

gonna have to dump all my forward pack bro-love onto Willie and Kade from now on. I can live with that.

I'll probably feel the same gut wrenching pain I experienced when Ben Kennedy pulled on a Manly jersey. I don't think I have it in me to hate Richie, hell even if he pulled on a QLD jersey.

Richie was always a favourite of mine and he will be missed. He only knew one way: straight and hard. I always found my spirits would lift when he came off the bench. Aside from Richie, Tetevano is the only other "unwanted" that I'll miss, if the speculation proves true.

Sad too loose a club favourite but someone who isn't performing under the worlds best coach who's contracted for 4 years is a liability to be eliminated.

That being said hope Richie goes well at the Storm and I can predict under Bellamy once he gets enfused with some anger will be a wrecking ball once again.

It's a bit of a strange feeling that I agree with a cleanout, and yet the only players guaranteed to leave so far are Taia and Fa'aoso - easily two of my favourites.

I'd have been delighted to see them both sticking around and working on their games under Bennett, with Tuimavave, Edwards, Wes Naiqama, Sau, and Hilder all WAY ahead on my list of not bothering to re-sign.

Overall I'm still content to see a fair few changes to the roster, just not so sure these guys are the ones I'd be instantly showing the door.

Then again, maybe it's because they are a class above that it has been so easy for them to find other clubs quickly.

I don't know how we get rid of Hilder, after all this time would any coach know what position to actually put him in? He's just too small these days and his dummy-half service doesn't cut it.

Let's hope that means we are adding someone before June 30, otherwise there is little point for the change at this time of year.

I'd say it had to do with his work ethic... his handling (which seemed to have returned to shit again) and to a lesser extent, his defence.

Still, I think he was just about in the "least of our worries" category, because at least he made metres and provided impact.

So all of you rate Richie big time...interested in understanding why he was a fan favourite ??.

Happy to have him at Storm as well.
