FACT: Only one South Sydney player has represented NSW over the past 10 years

Not only have South Sydney not been contributing productively to the national competition for a long time. They have also done little to maintain and grow the interstate State of Origin series, specifically with regard to the NSW Origin team.

Will things change this year?

I don't know to be honest, as the NSW team has not been selected yet.

Discuss.

Thanks Phil Rothfield.

Article: http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sp...-nsw-in-10-years/story-e6frexqr-1226617689758

THEY are undefeated and second favourites to win this year's premiership - yet there is something NSW State of Origin selectors don't like about South Sydney.

There is so much wrong with this sentence I don't even know where to begin.

In the 10 years in question, Souths have made just two finals series, and have had a squad heavily populated with internationals from other countries and a few QLDers here and there.

It gets better.

And the Parramatta Eels, who have struggled as much as Souths in the past 10 years, have had five players chosen - Nathan Hindmarsh, Timana Tahu, Eric Grothe, Jarryd Hayne and Tim Mannah. Merritt is probably the unluckiest to miss out.

The Parramatta Eels (1 minor premiership, 4 finals series and a grand final appearance) have apparently struggled as much as Souths (2 finals series, no MP or GF).

The rest isn't even worth bothering with, but what a deplorably researched and poorly written load of tripe.

An extremely annoying article by the Daily Telegraph.

The implication is that because Souths are going so well more of their players should be selected for NSW.

Never mind the fact that they have about 5 players who will/have represented for Queensland, GB, or NZ.

That said I'd be picking Reynolds, fantastic little player.

Lets be honest, when it comes to Merritt his best chance and probably the right time was when Bellamy was picking his own shit players like Quinn, Turner and so on the wing. He would have been a deserving selection in front of them. Now....well there are better options.

Souffs big players are either internationals with allegiances to other countries or QLD'ers

it should come as no shock that they never get picked for NSW

I'm surprised he didn't add in 'maybe if they played for Saints, Knights or Manly'.

We all know that's the best way to get selected for the Blues ;)

Pretty misleading article (what a surprise). The Rabbitohs have been a legitimate force for a whole ONE season the past ten years (no, 2007 doesn't count).

There isn't a decent League writer in the DT's entire roster.

Yeah, the 2005 origin series would have been a clean sweep to NSW if we would have picked the in form and masterful Mick Moran or Joey Williams in 2005 game one instead of Brett "intercept" Kimmorley. Souffs have been robbed. When Roy Bell can't even crack Origin it's not just the racist selectors, it's something against the powerhouse that is Souffs.

All this does is highlight how generally shit Souffs players have been in the last 10 or 20 years.

that's a blessing if your a souths supporter. some teams have had a few selected only to find it derails their chances in the nrl comp. they have a separate w/e for the aust v NZ game so nobody is disrupted yet the soo still leaves teams without players and makes it unfair. i think they will have more reps this year with the Burgess brothers. the trouble for merrit is the wing spot is always heavily contested. with great fullbacks and centers as well. even going back to when specialist center ET was always put on the wing same as Michael Conner. because we end up have more great centers and fullbacks they are picked on the wing like Inglis. i think Merritt deserves to be picked on form and would do great at that level. he knows how to score wingers tries and has been top try scorer for many years. in saying that there are other good wingers who also deserve a go like josh mansour and jorge Taufua. john Morris should be in contention for 5/8 as he is the best in the comp at the moment. carney is out of form and injured and their is a case to say Reynolds would fit in great at 1/2 as a combination. i don't think that will happen with roosters going so good at the moment.

i reckon Chris McQueen would make a great soo bench player. big and strong can play center and 2nd row. maybe a contender in the future.
