Fail Defence; Panthers vs Tigers anaylysis.

Well, the title says it all.

We're conceding like 35 pts a game which is just f**king unacceptable.

Changes need to be made.

Too many f**king mistakes on 1st, 2nd tackle. Collis throws some real sh*t passes to Ryan.

Ryan is hitting the ball up - Big problem.

Galloway taking the bulk of the forward pack upon himself. He will make 15 meters every run, just need the rest to make 7-10.

Heighington is as dull as a brick in attack. Only runs towards markers and picks up 5 meters/slows down play the ball. Needs to work at hitting holes and running away from markers (best defenders)

Magic Kebab can only do so much on his own. He's often left defending 1v1 and it's really taking some sting out of him.

Too many missed tackles.

Need a bit more grunt during the middle phases 30-50 mins. We'll be run over then and we'll often be too far behind to mount a comeback after.

Need to stop early leakage of points.

Tuiaki needs to learn one thing - Run forward like a madman like in 07. I think Benji is starting to rub-off on him and it's making him look like a spastic.

Positives

Hanbury is a great Fullback - Good positioning, good under the high ball, good support play. A great addition to the squad.

Farah - Just a brilliant playmaker and dummy-half.

Keef - Best prop of 2009 by far.

Morris - My not be the sharpest tool in the shed by any means, but if rep squads were selected on effort - he'd be a captain 50 times over.

Negatives

Tuiaki - Tuiaki's creativity or lack thereof.

Collis - Stupid pass after stupid pass.

Gibbs - Lacks grunt for a prop and doesn't make up anything with talent.

Halatau - Bricks for hands and walking sticks for legs. Can't tackle but can at least hit a hole well.

Warren Ryan of Grandstand hung Collis out to dry tonight - said he let the try in that took the Panthers out to 30 - 22. From there we were gone. He cost us a couple of times against the Roosters early as well. Will we see him next week?

If anyone thinks Collis has been worse defensively than Halatau, they're dreaming. Against the Roosters he was hung out to dry by both his inside man (Morris) and the disappearance of his winger (Ryan) for their first try. He took his man, problem was the Roosters had two others on his outside and Ryan was nowhere to be seen.

Collis isn't playing well, and probably deserves a stint in reggies, but I'd love to see him with a winger outside him. Ryan bombed a good short-side play last night by falling asleep - you could actually see the frustration on Collis' face afterwards. He finally gets an opportunity to get his man one on one and creates the overlap only for Ryan to not be there.

Collis is a very competent defender, but he throws some stupid balls and makes some dumb runs at the sidelines sometimes.

I don't think anyone has suggested that.

However the fact that Dene has been terrible this year doesn't take away the fact that Collis is also playing well below NRL standard (and yeah so is Ryan).

If Collis turned and looked to see where Ryan was, he could of made the pass. The whole point of passing is to get the ball to a person in a better position than you. How did Collis know if Ryan was in a better position that him if he didn't look....that's right he didn't.

If any of our previous wingers were in Ryan's position he would have scored. Rieck, Crockett et al all love to be pushing the limit. Ryan was still in the dressing rooms waiting for kick off. It's no coincidence that Collis' form has immediately dropped from the moment Ryan has been outside him.

The defense is a different story. It's a pattern problem and everyone is suffering.

Yes, Ryan was day dreaming, and should have been in position, but Collis should have had a look. If someone wants to be a show pony and throw a no-look pass only for it to miss it's target, I will have no sympathy.

Show ponies like Gasnier, SBW, Hodges, Marshall etc all throw no look passes, they mostly don't throw them to donkeys though. Tis no coincidence that we naturally attack to the left these days.

Looks good when it comes off, Collis threw one that didn't, made him look stupid. To lay the blame soley on Ryan for that passage of play is ridiculous, but no doubt he was partially responsible.

It is not just those two players - it is the whole team. Matty Johns summed it up perfectly today on the Foory Show - We play to high risk football for the standard of our defense. Don't get me wrond our defence is terrible but the amount of pressure our attack puts on our defense os insane.

Everyone keeps saying "Our attack isn'the problam - we can score points - we just cant stop the other team from scoring" The fact is that our attack puts so much extra pressure on our defense it is not funny!! Throwing no look flick passes on tackle 1 is a perfect example - when it comes off (maybe 1 from 10) it looks great - the other 9 times when it doesn't work just creates more pressure on our already feable defence. And don't get me started on a shocking kick chase!!
