Just wondering what League fans thought of the press coverage of League.

I can only speak for Sydney but personally I believe that the 'Heralds' have a far superior and more intelligent coverage of our game.

This has been very evident in the coverage of the Independent Commission. The SMH and SH have been excellent whereas the Telegraph has been poor.

I feel that the Heralds have more substance and a deeper insight into the game in general

Also the head league writers at the Herald are immensly better the likes of Masters, Gould etc verses Rothfield.

Not sure if its the same in QLD & VIC but I think News certainly has to pick its act up.

That's been it for me. Although Magnay.... Just wish they would devote more pages to the game.

SMH has a couple of favourites in Gould and Masters, I also enjoy the Power Rankings. Besides that either one will do for me. They both have good and bad.

The Courier-Mail runs far less negative stories (imo) than the Telegraph even though they are both newsltd. Brisbane Times is only online so I usually just read the SMH as the league stories all are under the LeagueHQ banner.

You wouldn't bother with the couriermail is you hated the broncos :p

opinion based journalism has replaced fact based journalism & as the media strives to keep pace with people's ATM mentality ( no patience, need things in life quickly ), they must decide whether it's news first or news fact

journalists have their own agendas :
- Masters is still bitter after Super League
- Gould has some great ideas, but doesn't listen to other people whose thinking differs from his
- Rothfield seems to be driven by creating headlines & reactions

form the western outlands, The West has very little RL if any. The Sunday Times has alot more but it is usually just syndicated stories.

Brisbane doesnt have a choice - its News all the way. Sucks, but at least they have lots of Broncs coverage, even in the silly season..

Only choice in Brisbane is the Courier Mail but the coverage is good. Online LeagueHQ wins easily.

Townsville Bulletin (News) usually has pretty objective reporting, though obviously it's all Cowboys news. Sometimes I actually wish they could venture an opinion from time to time, it seems a bit bland compared to the SMH and Telegraph I get here in Sydney.

Typical Courier Mail headline.

"FORMER ORIGIN GREAT BACKS LOCKYER TO FULLBACK"

Oh wait, its just another pay for comment by Gordan Tallis. Again and again the FOG venting their opinion happens to be big Gordie.

Fairfax comfortably. Although the Sund Herald is a junk paper as much as the Tele, the SMH is a much better read than the trollop served up in the Tele

Sydney Morning Herald & Sun Herald writers have a superiority complex. Those with the Daily Telegraph know that it's just full of opinions & attention grabbing headlines ( designed to cause reactions ) rather than "boring" people with facts. It's like talkback radio.

 @ the poll results!

That's great... I thought there'd be more dickheads arguing and voting for News Ltd - my faith in the forums has been restored!

15 years ago I would have said that the Fairfax press had, by far, the better quality journalism. News had, at that time, gone down the path of trashy sensationalism.

The SMH is now also delivering hatchet jobs and sensationalised headlines with only a vague basis in truth.

They are both as bad as each other. Don't be fooled that the SMH is still printed on broadsheet; it is just as trashy as the tabloid.

I prefer the SMH...but some of Magnay's articles (Coffs Harbour coverage, Stillnox and Roosters betting scandal are standouts) really contravene the paper's normally rigorous journalistic standards. Even when her articles turn out to be just plain wrong, there is no correction, or the rebuttal article is a tiny piece away from the main pages.
