David Fairleigh has been told by Newcastle he is not wanted in 2006.
Good chance he will be appointed coach of the Eels Premier League.
By the way, Simon Woolford is to sign with St George/Illawarra tonight or tomorrow..that's justa 'by the way'....

Very interesting that. Fairleigh was keen to stay on and Smith wants Rick Stone to be the Premier League coach and doesn't want another Assistant Coach. Warren Ryan has big wraps on Fairleigh and he has done well with the Knights PL side. Big pick up if it happens.

Fairleigh is well respected in the rugby league fraternity and would be welcome acquisition to our club, I think it was always on the cards.

I think you'll find that the coaching personel from Firsts to flegg would be vastly different next year.

<H1 class=news_story>Fairleigh not assured of Knights' first grade coach spot
Monday, 29 May 2006. 08:09 (AEDT)

Newcastle Knights' premier league coach David Fairleigh appears to have been squeezed out of a role with the top side next year under new coach Brian Smith.
Fairleigh had indicated he wanted to be Smith's assistant, similar to the arrangement with Michael Hagan this year.
The ABC understands Fairleigh was assured at board level he would have a role with the first grade side next season.
But Knights' CEO Ken Conway says no assurances were made and as Rick Stone is already contracted as assistant coach, he doubts there is room for Fairleigh.
"Brian made it clear to me a fortnight ago, and I expressed this view to David, that Brian didn't see the need for a second full-time first grade assistant coach," he said.
"He saw that there needed to be a greater focus on coaching of the premier league and the lower grades to educate and develop the players."

<H1 class=headline>Fairleigh to leave Knights at season's end
The Newcastle Knights board has confirmed its current Premier League coach David Fairleigh will not be offered a contract for the 2007 season.
Former Parramatta coach Brian Smith will take over from Michael Hagan as Newcastle head coach next year and the Knights' board said it was his responsibility to select support staff.
Fairleigh, a former Australian and New South Wales back rower, will continue in his current role for the remainder of the season.

Not really surprised by this there was a small bit in the paper after Brian re-signed from Parra that he didn't want Fairleigh there but the Knights had previous said that he'll have a job.

Based on this looks like Smithy will get the same level of control at the Knights that he had at Parra.

another scoop from PP, good work

who wouldn't want to coach our premmy league team, they are always in the top two, reigning premiers and looking pretty good for this year as well

chances are we won't have the same talant at our disposal next season. it appears that the club is likely to sacrifise a bit of depth for talent next season.
