Faking neck injuries.

It appears as if since the introduction of the penalty for a crusher tackle that there are many more instances of so called neck injuries from them. Matt Scott came out in the presser yesterday saying that Merrin told him that he milked the penalty which Scott was placed on report for, for an alleged crusher tackle in which Merrin feigned a neck injury. Surely faking a neck injury is something the game can do without.

Feigning any injury is embarrassing but it has gone far beyond mocking individual players for doing it. All teams do it and why wouldn't they? If you feel any significant contact to your head or the back of your neck you can be fairly certain you'll get a penalty.

The crusher tackles are particularly frustrating because it is so easy to fall like that in a multi-defender tackle even when the malice and intent isn't there

Forcing players who appear to have a neck injury to undergo a 5 minute injury assessment would stop it happening almost immediately...

So you're saying that players are pretending to be injured to exploit a rule in the game?

Who would have thought it possible...

They should have a panel of players and former players to discuss each case during the week.

Perhaps Cameron Smith can be in charge?

Merrin was sent off for an assessment I believe. We certainly got a free sub out of it. I don't like it at all and if Merrin is going to fake it in the future he should keep his mouth shut about it afterwards.

noticed this in the dragons game on thursday.. mcculloch gets tackled, stays down and starts clutching at the back of his neck, as soon as the whistle blows, he jumps up..

never realised the best cure for a neck injury was the sound of a whistle..

personally, i'm disappointed in the person penrith have trained merrin to become..

he would never have pulled this kind of stunt when he was wearing red & white..

Has become an issue due the video referee reviewing tackles after players stay down.

They feel any pressure, or an arm on their face they will stay down. It's a joke.

Yep anyone who stays down and cant play the ball for a high tackle or crusher straight off to be 'accessed', will kill the problem straight away.

This happens a lot anyway because they get a fee sub so if it is a forward they almost always come off.

Yup, with lowered interchange anytime a penalty can be milked and have someone placed on report thus giving a free interchange will be seen as gold and continue to happen.
If they then make it like the concussion rule where a player doesn't even have to be put on report we may as well play with unlimited interchange.

The worst was when Sam Burgess faked it and went full soccer style by getting stretchered off. Typical rabbitoh scum.

It is just another ridiculous exploit that the players have found. It's agony to watch them fake a neck injury whenever they decide they need a penalty. An argument could be made for a crusher tackle in almost every set.

As has been said, the only way to stamp it out (and not punish the poor bloke who will actually get hurt once in a while) is to force them off the field for an assessment. This shouldn't be a free interchange though.

Oh and while we're at it - when are they going to finally clamp down on the Video Ref being involved in gameplay decisions?!?!? A couple of years ago they came out and said that the video ref would only be used for try-scoring situations, then proceeded to ignore their own advice. Then they came out and said it could only be used in a situation where a player would be put on report, and I'm pretty sure they're once again ignoring that. Just leave them out of all decisions unless a (potential) try has been scored.

Not to mention the ridiculous situation where players go down clutching a shoulder, but the trainer takes them off under the concussion rule.

What's ridiculous are those crusher penalties where the attacking playing is backing into the defence (a couple over the weekend) ... WTF is the defence supposed to do?
