interesting development with Storm invstigating moving to a fan ownership model similiar to Green Bay packers. I can see how it can help generate one off revenue boost but does it offer an ongoing revenue source?

Has becoming publicly listed worked for the Broncos?

I have my doubts especially given the upcoming retirement of Smith.

As soon as Melbourne come back to the field, that is the end of that club.

Any comment Frank Ponissi?

Agreed, with one exception.

NRL will never let it happen.

After 20 years and some of the best teams ever assembled the lack of interest in Melbourne really is staggering.

I go down there 1-3/ month and there are many times during the NRL season there is next to nothing in the papers.

The papers aren't a reliable judgement for the popularity of rugby league in Melbourne. The crazed nature of AFL means rugby league lose out on the back 10 pages of the paper automatically. Even when they make a GF, the same weekend so do at least one Melbourne side in the AFL GF and obviously the GF is played at the MCG every year as well. Hell, they even have a holiday on the Friday just for it.

Having said that I agree with the sentiment. When Bellamy leaves, the superstars are gone and success can't be guaranteed, fans will turn away. In one sense Melbourne is great for sport, they do it so well...but there are so many fans of that side who are fans of success. They know f**k all about league and think Smith/Slater are saints of the game who are the horrible victims of tall poppy syndrome.

This charts it perfectly: http://www.rugbyleagueproject.org/teams/melbourne-storm/seasons.html

You can say the NRL won't let it happen but I can't see how they'll facilitate the next phase when all the big 3 are gone and Bellamy goes as well.

Top 5 in crowds and top 3 in memberships. Yeh the lack of interest is staggering compared to these clubs with 50-100 years under their belts!

Melbourne have had nearly 15 years of continued success, apart from a minor hiccup, let's see how well supported they are when they spend a decade out of the top 8.

If they wanted a pilot team, someone like NQ would work. You could say Newcastle, but we all know what happens when their fans get some power

Rabbitohs Members already own 25% of the club including the name, logo, colours, jersey and home city.

Any fan is able to become a member of the Parramatta Eels Leagues Club.
Those fans can then vote on who sits on the board. Basically, the fans do run the club...and we're f**king shit at it apparently.

Go to Melbourne often do you?

How do you think they'll go if/when there aren't the same level of stars and performances drop off? I'm betting similar to Brisbane in AFL.

A massive 700 players in Victoria after 20 years and some of the best teams around.

1 Vic born player, who is Tongan, to make first grade.

Little to no coverage in media, and from the customers I visit yet to find one fan. All of them have an AFL team though.

Who the f**k buys newspapers these days? Cafes (to put on the counter to read while you're waiting) and people over 50. Hardly representative of the entire population. Most people with a heartbeat get their news online.

I would never want clubs to sell shares to fans.

Better to do the LC model; memberships give fans a say in the club, but they need to pay every year to renew it and there is no limit to the number of voting members.

Selling shares implies dividend payments, which is absolutely not something clubs should be doing.

Nah, melbourne cares more about sport in general.

Maybe RL is small, but thats only compared to the love VFL gets.

Storm still are as popular as most Sydney teams.
