Why does Hybrid_Tiger never join these things? Is it because he knows when I beat him he can't pull out his "you know nothing about football" calls anymore?

I'd love to skipper Gunns

CESC FABREGAS insists Arsenal are still the team to watch this season — and one day wants to lead them out as captain.

The Gunners missed out on the Premiership title to arch-rivals Chelsea last term as well as losing the Champions League final.

But Fabregas reckons they will continue to play with the flair and style that beguiled Europe last season.

Arsenal’s superkids destroyed Dinamo Zagreb earlier this month — and now they are ready to carry that form into the Premiership when they line up against Aston Villa at the Emirates this afternoon.

Fabregas, 19, insisted: “We are one of the best attacking teams in Europe so we know if we get clean sheets we will always score goals.

“Chelsea have a great team, I respect them, but to be honest I don’t really enjoy watching them all that much.

“They are very strong and seem to play the long ball, then go for the second ball. It is different to the way we play. For me it is us, Barcelona and AC Milan who play the great football.”

Fabregas does not leave his teenage days behind him until the eve of Arsenal’s clash against Chelsea at the Emirates on May 5.

But already his Gunners CV reads like something from Roy of the Rovers.

He was their youngest player and goalscorer at 16, a regular in the Premier League at 17 and then helped lift the FA Cup at 18.

A fortnight after his 19th birthday he was playing in the Champions League final.

Then, having forced himself into the starting line-up for Spain at the World Cup finals, he was nominated for the Best Young Player Award.

He admitted: “I was one of the first of the young Arsenal players such as Mathieu Flamini, Philippe Senderos and Johan Djourou when I arrived three years ago and it’s been so positive to see a lot more young lads come through.

“There is definitely a buzz here and we think we are capable of doing better in every competition.” After being a target for Real Madrid, Fabregas is now looking to the future only with Arsenal . . . and one day being their skipper.

The midfielder, who has a contract until 2011, said: “I was captain of the youth teams at Barcelona and I like to lead by example.

“One day I would like that honour at Arsenal. Thierry is a great captain but I hope I can stay at Arsenal for a very, very long time and if I have the chance I would love to be captain.”

The boy king has filled out this summer and is now getting the brawn to match his brain.

He said: “I’m a bit quicker and stronger and I think I’m now more capable to run with the ball because of that.

“This is one of the things I learned from Patrick Vieira, he was always getting forward and he could defend too.

“Watching a lot of the things he did has really helped my game.

“I will never be like Patrick, of course, but it is good for a central midfield player to be a physical presence, although the most important thing of all is what’s inside your head.”

Fabregas has already nabbed Vieira’s old No 4 shirt — now he wants to start bagging more goals. He has set himself a target of around 15 for this campaign, having scored twice in the 3-0 defeat of Dinamo Zagreb in Croatia.

He said: “It’s true that I used to score lots of goals in youth football, maybe 30 or 35 a season.

“But in my first full season at Arsenal, I scored three and last season five. I now feel much stronger and more confident going forward and the target I have set for myself is very high. I’d prefer not to say what it is, people will think I’m crazy!”

Fabregas added: “I’m always trying to learn from what the boss says and my team-mates.

“I knew I had to improve defensively. I think I have but I’ve still got a lot to learn.

“One day you might be improving your passing, another day your tackling or strength in the air.

“Even Thierry and Ronaldinho still want to learn. You can always improve.”

Fabregas still has one regret from last season — losing to his former club Barcelona in the Champions League final.

He said: “I still think we deserved to win. It was so hard to take.

“Now we have to believe we can get there again — and we do believe.”
