2. John entwhistle - although i wasnt ever a big who fan this guy just blows me away

3. Geezer butler - this guy brings bass to the status of lead

4. Dave gilmour- yes i know he is a guitarest but he played lots of bass because waters really didnt cut it - hey you for example is fretless bass to perfection

3 spring to mind for me,

les claypool flea from the chilli peppers and matt freeman of rancid. all 3 are absolutely great bass players. matt freeman is my pick out of those 3. he's basically the lead guitarist in rancid with some of the bass lines and solos he comes up with.

special mention to fat mike of nofx aswell, he plays some bloody hard bass lines and yet is still able to sing his guts out. death of john smith and the decline being great examples

Steve DiGiorgio and nobody else really comes close.
Word, the guy is an absolute monster. A few other guys I've rated over the years:

Les Claypool
Steve Harris

My favourite bassist is Lex Felthem, the old Frenzal bass player. Vry good bass guitarist and its a pity he left.

Scott Owen is cool as well, and matt freeman and Geezer Buttler and Clifff Burton.
Victor Wooten is the best iov herd.

Les Claypool definitely, I got to be a roadie for one night at a Primus gig on their last tour out here. It was soooo tempting to take his bass before the show when we setting up the stage, it was such a beaut lookin instrument.......but theres no way i'd do it.

John Paul Jones
Flea
Les Claypool

all good bass players from rock bands

however

if you are serious, download and listen to Victor Wooten, and you wont talk about the other guys in the same sentance, as this guy.

The guy is a freak, probably more of a jazz player, he plays solos that will blow your mind.
