Well there you go.

Mike Portnoy from Dream Theater writes some of their lyrics too. One of the few bands where every single band member writes lyrics at various times - but then you'd be hard pressed to find a band with five genuinely brilliant musicians in it.

Most are lucky to have two.

Bono's my fave,

Lyrics for Exit

You know he got the cure
You know he went astray
He used to stay awake
To drive the dreams he had away
He wanted to believe
In the hands of love

His head it felt heavy
As he cut across the land
A dog started crying
Like a broken hearted man
At the howling wind
At the howling wind

He went deeper into black
Deeper into white
Could see the stars shining
Like nails in the night
He felt the healing
Healing, healing
Healing hands of love
Like the stars shiny shiny
From above

Hand in the pocket
Finger on the steel
The pistol weighed heavy
His heart he could feel
Was beating, beating
Beating, beating oh my love
Oh my love, oh my love
Oh my love

My love

Saw the hands that build
Can also pull down

The hands of love

Axl Rose and David Lee Roth are my other faves

Sloan has 4 members. They all write, sing and they are all multi-instrumentalists, and they sing 4 part harmonies.

They often change instruments mid-show because, well, they can.

Teenage Fanclub has 3 main members and they all write and sing.

If you're a fan of Gene (and as you're obviously a fan of SYL I assume you are) you have to checlk out his earlier stuff with DA, they were the most criminally underrated act in the speed/thrash scene. They actually reformed recently and were abut to put out a new album but unfortunately Ron, the vocalist had to retire from music permantly due to an injury suffered in a motorbike accident so it doesn't look likt the comeback album will happen anymore. :(

Yeah I'll download some and have a listen.

Yes I am a fan of Gene and his versatility. He was filling in for Opeth until recently which is quite different to SYL obviously - a bit more jazzy.

In fact, is there anyone Gene hasn't played with?

Have you heard the story about how he got the gig with Opeth?

In 2003, Gene Hoglan stood in for Martin Lopez of the famous progressive death metal band Opeth for three shows on Opeth's Lamentations tour. Asked to come in on short notice (Lopez was suffering panic attacks), Hoglan reportedly learned Opeth's notoriously long and complex songs in a single day. As Opeth frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt put it, "We called him up the day before the gig and asked him if he could play 'The Drapery Falls' and he said he hadn’t heard it but Devin had it on disc. Then we played it at sound check and he nailed it the first time. And as the support bands were on he was listening to 'Demon of the Fall' on headphones and then nailed it during the gig."

(From Gene's entry in Wikipedia)

The guy is an absolute machine.

I have little snippets of songs that i just love

'Lately I'm getting better
Wish I could stay sick with you' - foo fighters

'Tell me off in the hotel lobby right in front of all the bellboys and the
over-friendly concierge' - pavement, dont know why but i just love that line

'To call at 7:03 and on your machine I slur a plea for you to come home
But i know it's too late
I should have given you a reason to stay' - Death Cab - i think that line is so sad
