Fenech offers to help Mundine
By Grantlee Kieza
June 10, 2005

ANTHONY Mundine still has the talent to regain a world boxing title and his old enemy Jeff Fenech wants to help him on his quest.

Fenech, who until last month was priming Danny Green for a huge fight against Mundine, now says he will offer The Man any help he wants in securing another title opportunity following his points loss to Mikkel Kessler in Sydney on Wednesday night.

Fenech also hinted at a possible legal stoush with Green, the fighter he guided to the WBC Interim super-middleweight title in 2003 but who replaced Fenech with Cuban-born Ismael Salas as his new coach last month.

Fenech is in Washington DC preparing Mike Tyson for a comeback fight against Irishman Kevin McBride on Sunday but followed Mundine's fight with Kessler with great interest.

"I think Anthony will be a world champion again," Fenech said.

"Even though he lost against Kessler he showed a lot of talent to go the distance against a pretty formidable guy.

"I know for a fact that Anthony would easily beat Markus Beyer, who holds the WBC title and just beat Danny Green.

"If Anthony wants the fight with Beyer he only has to call me and I'll do my best with my friends at the WBC and the Beyer camp to get him the opportunity.

"I'm confident I could get him the fight because Anthony is well known in Germany after his bout with Sven Ottke [in 2001]. "He has the perfect style to beat Beyer and would be way too fast for him.

"Anthony has trouble with pressure fighters who can punch but a boxer like Beyer would be a sitting duck for Anthony's fast hands."

Fenech said that while Green had replaced him as his trainer because of Fenech's commitment to Tyson in America, he still believed he had a valid agreement to act as Green's manager.

"I'm the guy who took Danny to the Interim world title and because of me he got over a million dollars to challenge Beyer," Fenech said.

"That kind of money was unheard of for a challenger. Promoters here in America still can't believe the deal I got for him.

"If Danny wants someone else to train him well and good but I should be compensated for all the money I invested in his career, promoting all his early fights and getting him pay days that no one else would get him.

"Danny says he'll never forget what I did for him but if he doesn't want to pay me out what I feel I'm owed as his manager then we will end up in court."

Fenech said he believed a Mundine-Green fight was now closer than ever and would still be an enormous attraction even without a world title at stake. "I think it is still the biggest fight in Australia by far," Fenech said. "And I believe I have helped Danny build a profile from which he will make a huge pay day against Mundine. People will pay to see them fight regardless of whether it's for a world title. The interest around it is huge even among people who don't follow the fight game."

So as quick as that he is no longer talking up Greens chances to beat Mundine. Fenech is all about money and nothing else, he didn't have Greens best interests at heart he only wanted him to settle a score for him and in the process hindered Greens career to the point of it practically being gone.

Couldn't agree more Mong.

Jeff Fenech is out to get Danny Green, he will take him to court for loss of income and will definately be in the Mundine corner when he takes on his former protege in the next 12-18 months.

This 'Green vs Fenech' thing will be every bit as ugly as the 'Mundine vs Green' rivalry.

Perhaps we will have our own Rocky V in the making? Rocky (played by Fenech) takes on Tommy Gunn (played by Green)

sounds like a wrestling storyline...except this is real. I hope it happens as it would be the biggest fight in the history of australia.

Mundine has Roy Jones Sr helping him now! As if he needs that slack jawed hack Fenech! I hope Mundine tells him to go shove it up his @rse!

He has only offered to help him getting ranked by the WBC.

If Green has broken his contract with Fenech then he deserves to be compensated.

What about Greens career.. perhaps fenech should compensate him for what has happened due to bad managment....

geezze dude, are you always on here?

Getting him TWO title shots is bad management?

No, using him as a pawn that ultimatley cost him a world title is though

Using him as a pawn in his fight with the Mundines.. the fight that green does not appear to have ever recovered from was the Sullivan fight.. Why did he even fight Sullivan.. oh thats right to try and KO him cause Mundine Jnr didn't. Trying to prove a pointless point.

Bad management to let the whole thing go that far.

In the end the Mundines reciprocated and got the TKO that Green fought himself to exahaustin to try to get... its a sad story i feel bad for Green and hope he gets back to where he was. Though i beleive his trainer lives o/seas and green is still here.. not sure how that is good for him.

Actually that's incorrect. Kessler pulled out after that.

Still can't see that he was managed badly.

Green was sick for that fight and the temp indoors was quite hot, apparently.

Anyways that is a nothing fight. Fenech got him TWO title shots and got the WBC to still keep him ranked highly despite losing.

I doubt many others could of done this for Green.

Exactly, it was a nothing fight and it has cost him his career to date... All to play Fenechs little games..

fenech is great in that he gets his boxers world title shots, but his record as a trainer is becoming a cocern. Only won one world title and that was with Vic in 2004.
