fien has been kicked out, no points to GB, and kiwis on zero now, no response from kiwis just yet. its good to see that they took the points off them, shows a bit of gutsyness, and that they are not scared of threats that the kiwi team made earlier in the week about pulling out.

The bar has been set, lets wait for next season when Kiwi players are ruled out of the GB Test match and the RLIF do nothing about it again......

Well NZL will surely fire up and win against the Poms, if they lose and GB wins against the Aussies, in the end it doesnt matter.

Just hope its a wakeup call, not just NZL but other nations as well.

btw did they say Fien was kicked out of the tournament, or International football altogether. If this happened next year, Fien would be allowed to play cause of the stupid residency rule.

Fien banned as Kiwis lose points

November 02, 2006
NEW Zealand was today stripped of its two competition points and Nathan Fien banned from taking any further part in the Tri-Nations tournament.
The Rugby League International Federation ruled at a hearing today that the Australian-born hooker was ineligible to represent the Kiwis.
The RLIF made the decision after an exhaustive day of international phone hook-ups after New Zealand presented its submission to the tournament's governing body late yesterday.
The RLIF committee said it became apparent after today's talks that New Zealand knew on October 19 that Fien's great grandmother and not his grandmother's name was on the New Zealand birth certificate he had provided.
Tournament rules dictate a player's parents or grandparents have to be born in the adopted country for him to be able to switch allegiances.
The penalty has now put New Zealand's hopes of qualifying for the November 25 final in jeopardy with the team locked on zero competition points with Great Britain.
New Zealand has only one more match to play, against the Lions in Wellington on Saturday week.
The Kiwis were docked the two Tri-Nations points earned in last week's 18-14 win over Great Britain in Christchurch, in which Fien started at hooker for New Zealand.
The for-and-against points recorded in the match have also been expunged.
Fien had made his Test debut for the Kiwis a week earlier against Australia in Melbourne.
He has reportedly already left the Kiwis camp and is believed to be headed back to Townsville.

Right decision, harsh but fair.
I agree but with a worry that it'll set back the progress international league has made over the last few years. Regardless of who's fault it is we're all in this international RL boat together and we've got to look to the common good for our future. So yes I think the penalty is harsh but it is certanly justified given the nature of the breach committed. But now it's been handed out, we shouldn't let it degenerate into an acromonious series of tit-for-tat pay back exercises (such as pulling out of the Tri-Nations). It's time to build bridges to ensure the penalty and adverse publicity doesn't linger and continue to damage not just in NZ League but international RL as a whole.

And by that I mean take some substantial steps to address the concerns that NZRL has with the international game. Specifically access to players, through the leak of NZ eligible players wanting to play Origin in a country that already has more than enough players of it's own, the problems with getting players released for representative matches during the season, and the lack of a NZ equivalent of Origin competition. This is not to reward them for breaking the rules, they are getting penalised and getting penalised hard for what they've done. But let's take this bridge building opportunity now upon us (and we should treat at it as an opportunity) to address some of the real issues that are making it tough for New Zealand Rugby to compete on the international stage.

Who made this decision? The RLIF?
What a joke this whole thing has been. The RLIF is the ARL and RFL ( ie Australia and England). What a farce. The ARL should be punished for this more than the NZRL. The dickheads at the ARL are the ones running the international game (supposedly). It is they who make the rules (as stupid as they are) and if they have no way of investigating a player's eligibility before he plays how can they then punish the nation involved? If the RLIF (ARL) were the slightest bit organised or competant they'd have investigated his eligibility earlier, not two games later. This whole situation is the fault of the RLIF and the blokes running it, ie the ARL.
I hope the NZRL ensure the ARL (via the NRL) enforce the international laws that state all players must be made available for Test football from now on. I bet the ARL won't be so keen to see those rules enforced then.
