Netball Australia and Netball NSW announced today the name given to the new Hunter Region team debuting in the 2004 Commonwealth Bank Trophy. The Hunter Jaegers, named after a tireless, piratical bird found on the eastern seaboard, that teases and harasses other birds, forcing them to drop their prey. Attributes the Hunter Jaegers are keen to develop and deliver on-court.
The name Hunter Jaegers was decided after Netball Australia and Netball NSW, in conjunction with Western Suburbs Leagues Club, ran a Name Your Netball Team competition in the Newcastle Herald. The competition asked local netball fans to name their team, chosen from five options and explain in 25 words or less why they selected this name. The winner was announced at the launch and rewarded with two season passes and a netball pack.
Maria Lynch, Coach of the Hunter Jaegers said today that she plans to set and maintain standards for the new team. I dont want the team to be distracted by the expectations and ambitions of others.
Stating that the best chance of success for the team is through plenty of preparation and thoroughness in building a team that fits together as a great unit. Maria plans to approach the 2004 season with energy, dedication, effort and enthusiasm. She is looking forward to embracing change and seeing the year as a period of growth.
The Hunter Jaegers will make their inaugural appearance in the 2004 Commonwealth Bank Trophy at their home court, the Newcastle Entertainment Centre, 7.30pn on Friday 30 April against the Queensland Firebirds.
