Fireworks failing to spark ticket sales

They were throwing tickets away on Sunrise this morning. The bloke even asked one lady how many she wanted.

hehehe - yeah I had a chuckle over that...

sadly, unlike AFL, NRL seems to have lost a 'spiritual home' of RL. the MCG is, and always will be, the stadium to host the GF. it was built around the game itself.

the question needs to be asked - why did the NRL embark on an exercise to remove the heart and soul and history from the GF, and expect the fans to blindly follow?

on a day when a morning tv show literally throws tickets at anyone who turns up to grin at the camera, these tickets should be like Willy Wonka's gold tickets - rare, and so sought after you would sell your Grandmother for one.

I remember the days when the NSWRL would not allow a LIVE broadcast of the GF on TV unless it sold out....Obviously,it sold out most of the time...I guarrantee anybody that if the NRL make that threat of a delayed telecast in Sydney, then watch the tickets how quickly it would sell.....
The problem is that the NRL are sooo far up Channel 9 ass,it aint funny...Say what you like about broadcast rights etc,but to have the GF have empty seats completely devalues the product and the NRL as a whole...
Let channel 9 have a bitch about it,but the NRL should have some guts and make a stand....
Tooo many f**kin lazy Rugby League supporters wont go to the game because its far to easy to watch it LIVE on TV...f**k em...the code is dying because of these type of people and the NRL and Gallop are just complete puppets.
What bullsh*t. There are too many teams in Sydney. This GF isn't Sydney v Melbourne it is Manly v Melbourne. If the Broncos played a grand final at Suncorp it would sell out in 15 minutes.

Is there a team in the NRL that don't struggle to draw large crowds away from home? Especially interstate away games which all ours essentially are?

NSW sides playing each other.

heading to phillip island to watch the motogp. i wont even be watching the game.

F**K off then. Having said that, when the Manly v Canterbury GF was on in 95, I was travelling through remote New England - happily out of radio range.

You should all be made to live in an AFL city for two years then you'd jump at the chance of going to watch a GF!

Sad reflection of the team v's code argument. Give me fans that support their code over fans that support their team anyday!

You hypocrite. You do nothing but bag the code, and pine over your defunct team!

Why do so many of you think that fans through the gate are more valuable that fans watching tele? Every shred of evidence points to the contrary.

Tall poppy syndrome. It's what - $80 bucks return on Jetstar from Brisbane to Sydney?.

Might be 4 million watching, but they'd whinge if there was 4 empty seats.

NRL fans in Sydney are fickle pricks and if i was the NRL,clubs and players i go looking esle where i.e go back to Rugby Union.

Dumb f*ck comment of the year. Beats the Dangertwat "Broncos will smash Storm" thread, and Storm Chasers "Does my arse look big in this" posts hands down.

Maybe YOU should go back to the prehistoric slime that you'd aspire to be.

Shame because i thought Malys one of the teams who alays had good support but maybe not enough to fill an 80000 plus ground.
Shame on all non-Manly Sydney Rugby League fans for not going to the jewel of australian RL crown.

Look at the AFL,their TV rights are much higher than the NRLs,but they contiually push memberships and gate takings...Why?...Because clubs MUST learn to pay their own way and learn to survive...and also with the AFL..They NEVER televise live against the gate in Melbourne unless its sold out....

AFL clubs see little of the TV money. The AFL hoards it for all the money they spill into NSW and QLD. AFL clubs make money from memberships and people actually turing up to the games. IF you get 35000 members at say 180 a go that is $6.3 million dollars.

A team like Geelong makes $500000 for every game they play at Skilled stadium even with a crowd of 21000 people. 8 games there a year that is another $4 million and that is before you have sponsorships and social clubs and the like.

Acually they never telavise it live against the gate even if it is sold out in the same state. I think the only time it was live this year was a Melbourne Geelong game and that was because 7 had to go to the Olympic opening ceremony.

The Cheapest ticket to the AFL grand final was about double the NRL ticket prices and yet I would bet that they could have sold out 150000+ to go see the game rain hail or shine.

TV rights are second to the AFL yet they still manage to get the deals they want for them and a lot more money than the NRL get for theirs as well as not having everything they do dictated to them for said rights.

This is why the NRL really needs to sell the final to the highest bidder, with part of that bid being how they promote the game (like street parades etc).

It would create extra income through guaranteed money for the game, no matter what the success of the event. And the city putting on extra promotions as part of all that. Works well in the NFL, and I can't see why it wouldn't in the NRL either.
